Xiaomi Could Succeed in Fitting 5X Telephoto Lens with 50X Digital Zoom

The race for superiority in camera functionality in smartphones is well and truly on. The latest is the revelation that the Chinese giant Xiaomi has developed a camera setup that will include a telephoto lens offering 5X optical zoom. What’s the big deal you may ask since smartphone models like the Huawei P30 Pro and OPPO Reno have these capabilities. The new development from Xiaomi could be that the support for digital zoom could be as high as 50X. Now, that will place it in a different league.

This has emerged from reading the source code of Xiaomi’s inhouse skin MIUI’s latest version. These user interfaces are constantly updated by the companies to match the corresponding Android versions. XDA Developers has found these references to the Tele 5X and 50X zoom in the camera app of the MIUI.

Smartphone Camera Setups Evolving Rapidly

There’s no doubt that these developments will keep coming one after the other. There was a time when 20MP or 30MP cameras on smartphones were considered big. Today there already phones with 60MP primary shooters and this will go up to 120MP in a matter of months. Then came the number of lenses packed in the rear of the smartphones. Quad camera setups have become very common these days.

These developments have left in the hands of the smartphone user enormous possibilities in the photography section. However, the limitation of the smartphone’s camera to capture objects within close proximity was certainly felt. Now, with such zoom capabilities, distant photography will become another possibility.

Not Sure Which Smartphone Model Will Carry the Feature

XDA’s researchers have detected this development from the source code for the software which can be installed in any of the company’s upcoming models. It is therefore not feasible to predict which model of smartphone from Xiaomi will be fitted with this 5X telephoto lens that will also support the 50X digital zoom.

Higher Screen Refresh Rates?

The other interesting revelation that has emerged from the source code of the MIUI 11 is that the refresh rate in one of Xiaomi’s upcoming models could be as high as 120Hz. This is also a new development. Most smartphones in the market sport a 60Hz refresh rate. There have been a few models with a higher 90Hz refresh rates with the OnePlus 7T models making a mention of the higher refresh rates in their promotional campaigns. There are other models as well, with higher refresh rates.

There is no confirmation yet if the Xiaomi model with the 50X digital zoom will also have this higher 120Hz refresh rate.
