Windows 10 – How To Fix “Start Menu Has Stopped Working” Issue

Microsoft has brought the Start menu back on Windows 10 and this has made many users very happy. However, it seems that the Start menu has some issues on this operating system, as sometimes it doesn’t work at all.

Today we will talk about how you can solve the “Start Menu” problems by taking a few steps.

Launching Task Manager

You can launch the “Task Manager” by pressing the CTRL+ALT+DEL keys on the keyboard. You can also right click the Taskbar and select “Task Manager.”

Once the Task Manager window opens, you will need to click the “More Details” option to expand it and select “File->Run New Task.” Once the “run new task” dialog opens, you will have to type “powershell,” check the box “Create this task with administrative privileges” and click “OK.”

A new window will appear, where you will need to type in the command “sfc /scannow” and press “ENTER.” Keep in mind that this scan can take a while and once it ends it will give you one of the three results:

  • Windows did not find any integrity violations;
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and repaired them;
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some (or all) of them.

If you get the third result, write the DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth” command in PowerShell window and press “ENTER.” After you do this, it will download files from Windows update to replace the corrupted ones (this might take a while).

Reinstalling All Windows Applications

In case you don’t solve the problem by using the first solution, then you might want to try to reinstall all Windows Applications.

Usually a reinstall of ALL Windows 10 applications fixes the Start Menu issue. We have to mention that the process is not that complex, as all the applications are the ones built into Windows 10 and all of them are available on the Windows Store.

At the same time, the reinstallation is automatic and it will not take too long. However, keep in mind that this process might delete some data that you’ve saved in these Windows applications, so you should backup anything important before you start the reinstallation process.

HINT: Applications that are storing data online (in Microsoft OneDrive) or as files in a separate folder should not be affected.

To reinstall the Windows applications you will firstly have to launch the Task Manager and open a new PowerShell window with admin rights. Once the PowerShell window opens write the following command:

Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml”}

Now wait until the application downloads and installs all the Windows Applications. Once the installation is complete, ignore the red text and restart the computer. When the computer boots back in Windows, you will notice that the “Start Menu” is properly working once again.

Windows 10: Is It Worth Upgrading?

There are many people who are still wondering if it is worth upgrading to Windows 10. We can clearly say that the answer is “Yes” as this Windows OS is way better than the previous ones. We agree that there are still some issues with it, but Microsoft will surely solve them sooner or later.

However, until that happens you can easily find some sort of “temporary” fixes that will allow you to keep using the Windows 10 OS without any problems until a “real” patch is released by Microsoft.
