It cannot be said that Samsung has had a pleasant experience with its first foldable smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy Fold. There is now information that there is one more foldable smartphone the South Korean company is working on. The first foldable device was launched and samples were given to a number of people to test out. It was then found that it had some heating issues and Samsung put off the commercial launch to first address the issue. The latest reports indicate the phone may be out by August this year.
A New Foldable Smartphone with Different Form Factor – Is it Galaxy Fold 2?
Under the circumstances, it may come as a surprise to many that the company should be planning on developing another foldable device. However, this is exactly what a report from a Korean publication claims. Will it be called the Samsung Galaxy Fold 2?
According to this report, the new device will have a display screen of 6.7 inches in size and it will fold horizontally. Remember the Samsung Galaxy Fold has a different form factor where it folds inward like a book. This would also remind a lot of people of the good old feature phones that used to fold on the horizontal side. The display size, if this report is to be trusted, will be same as the Samsung Galaxy Fold. The difference again, would be that once folded, there is no secondary display worth its name except a small 1 inch window that can show notifications if any. This feature has also been seen in the foldable feature phones years earlier. They used to be known as the ‘flip phones’.
On the question of when this Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 would be made available to the market, it can only be speculated upon, since there is no confirmation on when the Samsung Galaxy Fold itself will be formally released after the bug has been fixed. Again, hoping that it happens by August, based on unconfirmed reports, it may be safe to assume that if the company were to launch a second foldable phone, it may not happen this calendar year.
