According to the latest news, Google might be considering rebranding their Android Wear devices to “Wear Os”. This new tidbit wasn’t released through official channels but from a user on Reddit who claims to have seen a new icon and title for their Android Wear smart watch. The user named H3x0n made a new post in the android wear sub-reddit where he/she put up an image of the new discovery.
However, no mention was made on the specific model where the new icon and moniker was seen. As once can see from the image shared in the post, the new icon looks more in line with the traditional Google colors of blue, yellow, green and red. The icon also displays a “W” which might be the new moniker of Wear OS. Some Reddit members speculate that it could also be “Watch OS” but if that’s the case, there might be some confusion between this name and “watchOS” which is an Apple product. It seems unlikely that Google will name their product the same as that of a rival company, especially when it sounds exactly the same.
So far Google hasn’t come out officially with any information in regards to the re branding. This may create some doubt as to the intention behind such a move. One Reddit user speculates that it may be because their smart watches are compatible with not only Android but also iOS platforms. Hence removing the “Android Wear” and replacing it with “Wear OS” would make more sense. Some have even discovered that the name has been changed it in the Google Play Services 12.5 update, according to 9to5Google.
The Reddit user H3x0n received a pairing notification which displayed the new logo and the same notification had come from Google Play Services version 12.5. In the beta version, one can clearly see the new logo and name whereas in version 12.4, only the name has been changed. Although some users have found this change to be logical and positive, others are a little disappointed with the logo. Right now such opinions are really from Reddit users than the general public as this new discovery was revealed very recently. It will be interesting to see if this rebranding will actually take place and the response to it by the consumers.
