WhatsApp vs. Signal – Which One Is More Secure And Safe

If you’re one of the people who really appreciate a good and secure chat app that offers an encryption feature, then most likely you are familiar with WhatsApp and Signal. However, the hard part is to choose one between the two, unless you want to use both of them. Let’s have a brief look at what features is each offering!

WhatsApp Features

WhatsApp is currently being used by more than 1 billion users every day, which is a number very few apps can reach. However, what is ironic is the fact that WhatsApp is working together with Open Whisper Systems, which is the company that created and brought Signal to the public. They are doing so in order to offer encryption protocols that are similar to the ones used for Signal.

One major difference between the two would be the fact that WhatsApp claims to be a messaging app, while Signal is, in fact, a security app. For this reason, WhatsApp offers more stickers, emojis and GIFs.

Even though it doesn’t equal WhatsApp number of users, Signal is popular for appearing in some controversial contexts related to international politics topics. For example, one clear situation was the one related to Edward Snowden, where the name of the app has been mentioned several times.

This happens because the messages you send through Signal get support from an end-to-end encryption type of protection. In translation, this means that if a third party would intercept the message you send to another user, they wouldn’t be able to read it.

Why is that? The process here is pretty simple. The information you send is converted to random letters and numbers, and then converted back to the initial form when it reaches the destination. As such, whoever is intercepting it will only see the random strings of letters and numbers, and not the message.
