What to do if your Xbox can’t connect to Xbox Live

If you want to play online multiplayer games using your Xbox One or your Xbox 360, you can do that with an Xbox Live subscription. Every user will confirm that the subscription is worth it. It usually works just fine, and you can dive into the world of online multiplayer gaming, which is more fun than playing offline and alone.

However, you may stumble upon an issue occasionally, and many users reported a problem saying they couldn't connect to the live service. If that's something you are bothered with, keep reading. We will share some ideas on what to do if you can't connect to Xbox Live.

Xbox Live server status

Before moving to other solutions that could be considered more complex, ensure there are no Xbox Live server issues. You can do that by going to the Xbox Live status page.

Reboot your Xbox

Press and hold the Xbox button on your console (keep holding the button for about 5 seconds). The light on the back will turn off, meaning the console is off. Once the Xbox is off, unplug the power cord and wait for a few minutes. Plug the cable and turn the Xbox on. This should refresh the system, and all the issues and bugs should be gone.

Reboot your modem/router

Sometimes, the issue is in the Wi-Fi network. You need to turn off the modem or router, unplug the power cable and wait for a few minutes. Plug the cables back in and turn the modem/router back on. When doing this, check the cables, including ethernet cables. Perhaps one of the cables is broken or damaged, which can cause connection problems. If that's the case, you will have to replace the cable.

Check Xbox Network Connection

You can do a network test on your console. Here is how:

  • Press the Xbox button
  • Go to system> General > Network Settings
  • Select Test multiplayer connection

You can find the solutions for various Xbox network errors and issues here.

Factory Reset your Xbox

If you have tried the solutions above and the solutions for network issues on the official Xbox page, then you may factory reset your console. Before doing this, remember that everything on the console will be wiped out, and the settings will go back to factory defaults. Make sure you have a backup. Here's how to do that:

  • On the controller, press the Home button
  • Select the gear icon to access the Settings
  • Go to system> Console Info
  • Select Reset Console
  • Select Reset and remove everything

As soon as you select that option, the process will begin.

Hopefully, one of the solutions we have listed here will fix the issue, and you'll successfully connect to Xbox Live.
