The new Sony smartphone, the Xperia Z5 lineup has to struggle, facing the hundreds of new smartphones. The public attention is split, because there are many new smartphones from Google, Huawei, OnePlus, and more. Sony keeps on facing their sharp decline of their smartphone business. The other business I meant is not the PlayStation lineup, but the one related to the smartphone world, that is the sensor business.
Sony gains a huge profit by selling their sensor Image Processing and the related components, which is used by many smartphones, including iPhone. Every single iPhone contains two Sony image sensors and related components. For every iPhone sold, Sony makes around $20, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Sony is planning to split their sensor business out into a separate company known as the Sony Semiconductor Corporation. They are now acquiring the Toshiba CMOS Image Sensor Business, as it’s quoted from PC Authority.
“As part of its plan to spin its already successful sensor business out into a separate company known as the Sony Semiconductor Corporation, the Japanese electronics manufacturer is working to acquire Toshiba’s CMOS image sensor business. All 1,100 employees at the Oita-based plant will transfer into Sony’s hands giving it a field of some of the best designers, engineers and researchers in sensor technology.”
It shows the company’s true capability. Sony is well-known for their great quality of Image Processing and the related components, and that’s why they survive and even have a bright future in the smartphone business.
