Waiting for the iPhone 9? Here’s What to Expect

Even if the iPhone 8 has yet to be released, there are already rumors about the iPhone 9 being developed. It is said to be Apple’s 2018 iPhone model and the tech company is moving some big players to accommodate their need to depart from the traditional operating strategy that Apple has been using.

Here’s what we know so far.

LG Chem will be the exclusive supplier for Apple’s iPhone 9 battery

Apple has been known to use a multitude of suppliers of various components in order to secure favorable pricing while ensuring that unforeseen manufacturing or technical hurdles will be avoided. But the battery that LG is working on maybe sufficiently impressive in terms of performance and design for Apple to go with just a single supplier.

The iPhone 9’s battery is rumored to be L-shaped to help optimize internal space. It is bent to the right at the bottom, which works to Apple’s advantage as the iPhone has evolved from the electronic component integration technology that was developed.

The same L-shaped, two-cell battery design is also believed to make an appearance in the iPhone 8. But all these remain a speculation until the device is launched later this year.

What makes this battery better is that the new design is expected to boost charging speeds. Making it faster and shorter.

It is also rumored that the new battery will extend the battery life of the upcoming iPhone 8. Yes, even greater than what the iPhone 7 plus can deliver, which, on a single charge, is 60 hours of wireless audio playback, 15 hours of Wi-Fi browsing, and 13 hours of LTE browsing. Imagine iPhone 9’s battery life if iPhone 8 can exceed the metrics of iPhone 7 Plus and improvements are made on the next iPhone model.

The iPhone 9 will mark the start of the switch to OLED screens

Although it is rumored that the iPhone 8 will be the first iPhone to have an OLED screen, it is highly likely that the screen will end up with the iPhone 9. This is mainly because Apple changes its plans often. While there are unconfirmed rumors that they are aiming for a three-model plan for 2018, many things can happen in between.

Presumably, a trio of iPhones will be introduced in 2018, all featuring OLED panels. Apple may release the iPhone 8s, 8s Plus, and the iPhone 9 if they do follow through with their plan.

OLED or Organic light-emitting diode that emits light in response to an electric current. It can be driven either by active-matrix (AMOLED) or a passive-matrix (PMOLED) control scheme.

What makes it different from an LED LCD display is that an OLED panel actually produces its own light. Its pixels are called emissive, while that of the LED LCD tech is called transmissive. How the brightness of an OLED display is controlled is done on a pixel-by-pixel basis, something that an LED LCD is incapable of.

With all these rumored specs, you might want to wait for the iPhone 9 rather than jump with the iPhone 8.
