Uninstalling Adobe Flash Player from Safari

If you keep up with technology news, you probably already know that Adobe Flash Player is one of the least dependable web clients in the world because of the numerous vulnerabilities it possesses. Adobe is doing its best to deal with these security concerns, but hackers are still discovering loopholes that allow them to  steal users’ information and even remotely gain control of a computer system.

Fortunately, if you no longer feel safe using Adobe Flash Player, uninstalling it from your browser and computer is easy. Here are the steps you should take if you use the Safari web browser on your Mac computer:

  1. Determine what Mac OS version you have. You can do this by clicking on the Apple icon and choosing “About This Mac”. A new window would appear showing the Mac OS version that’s running on your computer as well as your processor, memory, and startup disk information.
  1. Run the appropriate installer for your Mac OS version.

2.A. If you’re using Mac OS X 10.1 to Mac OS X 10.3:

  1. Download the uninstaller file from fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/flash/ts/uninstall_flash_player_osx_10.2.dmg.
  1. Go to Windows and click on Downloads to view uninstaller file the downloads folder.
  1. Double-click on the uninstaller file to open it.
  1. Find the uninstaller icon in the window and double-click on it to run the program.
  1. Enter the username and password for your computer if prompted, then click OK.
  1. Click the Continue button on the “Uninstall Flash Player OSX” window.
  1. While the uninstall process is going on, close your Safari browser as well as other web browsers that might be running in the background. Do the same for other applications that use Adobe Flash Player.
  1. The uninstaller window will close automatically once the uninstall process is completed.
  1. Restart your computer, open Safari, then go to helpx.adobe.com/flash-player.html to confirm that you have successfully uninstalled Flash Player.

2.B. If you’re using Mac OS X 10.4 and later versions, including macOS:

  1. Download the correct uninstaller file. If you’re using version 10.4 and 10.5, download the file from fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/support/uninstall_flash_player_osx_10.4.dmg. If you’re using version 10.6 and later, download the file from fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/support/uninstall_flash_player_osx.dmg.
  1. Go to Windows and click on Downloads to view uninstaller file the downloads folder.
  1. Double-click on the uninstaller file to open it.
  1. Find the uninstaller icon in the window and double-click on it to run the program.
  1. Click the Uninstall button on the uninstaller window.
  1. Close Safari and other web browsers as well as applications that use Flash Player.
  1. When the uninstall process is finished, the window will show this message: “Adobe Flash Player was removed from your system”.
  1. Click on the “Done” button.
  1. Go to your computer’s Library folder and delete these files: <home directory>/Library/Caches/Adobe/Flash\ Player and <home directory>/Library/Preferences/Macromedia/Flash\ Player.
  1. Restart your computer, open Safari, then go to helpx.adobe.com/flash-player.html to confirm that you have successfully uninstalled Flash Player.
