Train Your Brain: 5 Apps That Make You Smarter

We have prepared a list of applications that make you smarter, where you can pick the ones that attract you most. Some are free, others paid, but all will help you train your brain functions.

Applications that make you smarter – Duolingo

Ten years ago, to learn another language you had only two possibilities. One of them involves the hiring of a teacher for tutoring. The second, a little simpler, required significant amounts of willpower and the acquisition of audio tapes and manuals in the form of a course that you can take at your pace. Today, there is Duolingo, maybe the best application for learning new languages. In addition, it’s free, available in both web and version for iOS and Android.

It has a friendly interface, very easy to use and motivating. Each foreign language course is divided over several lessons, which compresses both aspects of grammar and vocabulary. You can take tests,  re-take some lessons, discuss with other users about specific words, etc. Along with advancing, the user receives experience points, helping it to grow and to observe its development. In addition, syncing the app with Facebook lets you see the level of your friends, and if you’re the competitive type, this might help you boost your morale.

Another very interesting function is the Duolingo test center, which allows you to measure your English skills for free and also obtain a recognized certificate. The test takes between 10 to 20 minutes and it is validated by the real examiner.

Applications that make you smarter – Lumosity

Lumosity is a series of games that improve your memory, thinking speed and multitasking. When you install the app on iOS or Android, you need to set some objectives. You don’t have to be very optimistic and take it all in order.

50 million people are already using the application in over 182 countries, and the team behind the app, Lumos Labs, it’s composed of neurologists, neuroscience researchers, and all the games are created from this idea.

The application is free to install, but it won’t allow you to make more than three exercises per day. Obviously, you can repeat it, but if you want to train more, you must pay a monthly or annual fee. It is not cheap – $11,99 per month.

There are six types of games. Chalkboard Challenge is a mathematical game whereby you compare equations, Ebb and Flow is based on green leaves and oranges that move across the screen, Lost in Migration is the game where we need to swipe in the direction of the bird in the middle. Memory Matrix recreates a pattern, Speed Match challenges you to remember if the shapes are the same from game to game, and Spatial Speed Match it’s like Speed Match, only that the displayed items are arranged in a triangle.
