The anticipation of playing the historical games of Total War series is finally going to come to an end as this game offers you a glimpse of Chinese history through the mayhem of the Three Kingdoms era. This game celebrates the achievements of some of the legendary heroes of this period, on and off the warfront. However, the game is far removed from the typical war formula.
The Three Kingdoms Release Date
The game is due for release in spring 2019, and it has been developed by Creative Assembly.
The setting of the game reflects the period from second to third century in China after the cessation of the Han Dynasty. Dong Zhuo is shown as the ruler who carries on with the leadership skills through the Child Emperor, along with two other prominent leaders Yuan Shao and Cao Cao. The struggle for power during the era is turned into mythology as described in the epic romance of Luo Guanzhong; The Three Kingdoms, set in the 14th century. The influence of this epic is dominant in this game as well, but the style of combat resembles the superhuman and reflects a lot of tactical powers and approaches. You can take a quick glance at the same approach on the battlefield, where the specialists of war and combat take on the unit of about a hundred enemies without any support. According to Director Jono Gasper, “characters are very much the cornerstone of the game: their interactions, friendships, rivalries and personalities drive the campaign game like never before”.
Characters in the trailer
Along with Cao Cao and Yuan Shao, the trailers show other characters such as Zhang Fei, Liu Bei, and Guan Hu. The gameplay also features some of the other characters such as Xiahou Dun, Lu Bu and Zhang Liao. The allied warlords of the heroes eventually form the three kingdoms Sun Wu towards the southeast, Shuan Han at the southwest and Cao Wei in the north. To the gamers, it appears as if the game begins with the fall of the ruler Dong Zhuo. Amidst the war and the tumultuous battles, the motto of every player is to shape the future of China. For the first time, Total War has ventured into Chinese history with new commanders, units, and battlefields.
The approach of the game
As you have been doing conventionally in the games of Total war, this one differs a bit. Here you can choose a character from eleven options. While playing the character you have chosen, you can recruit the generals who come with their staff and personnel. The classes of heroes in this game portray different kinds of abilities that are passive and active during combat. With the Guardians who are the masters of war in this game, the damage can be absorbed. The Strategists, on the other hand, are meant for making the enemies weaker. Finally, the Commanders can strengthen the friendly troops nearby.
Act of heroes
The heroes that you choose to fight on the battlefield can determine the kind of troops they need for the combat. As shown in the gameplay trailer, you can bring a group of five in one army. It seems that the dynamics between the heroes become effective in the warfront, and the levels of respect differ as well. As the heroes adopt different formation, the abilities become more evident at the later stage of the game. For instance, you can get an expert strategist on the battlefield, and facilitate the heavy cavalry to get into the mode of diamond formation.
History or mythology
The dilemma whether the game is historical or mythological can crop in the mind of the gamers every now and then until the final release. Even though there is a heavy influence of Romance of the Three Kingdoms, it is the hacking and slashing game that you can view, and the system of heroes designed to initiate some of the allegiances of that era, that becomes vivid. However, if you do not want the heroes to become superhuman, there is a classic mode in the game in which the heroes shuffle from one unit to another and are reduced to the level of humans.
Romance and classic mode
In the romance mode, the heroes can achieve more and exceed their powers. Your concerns about walking with the troops reduce when the game is in the romance mode, and stay in the fight for a long time without the reduced stats. On the other hand, the abilities of the General become less powerful in the Classic mode campaign. Once again, you can view the unit of bodyguards accompanying the generals at the warfront. The duels you come across in this game have a unique flavor. While in the Romance mode, the single combat style is applicable, in the Classic mode, you will come across the bodyguard units smashing on to each other, and within the greater combat, all the characters come together for their own fight.
Choosing the campaigns
Depending on the mode of the game you choose, the campaigns begin at the same time. You will come across the coalition defeating Dong Zhuo as the kingdom begins to fall apart. The perspective of pragmatism is valid in both the modes. However, in the Romance mode, you will come across several events from the story, and the action sequences can be initiated when you meet the right criteria. The resemblances are dramatic as Dong Zhuo is shown being hit by a stray arrow, and in the rest of the campaign, the man leads the troops wearing a patch in the eye just as it happens in the novel set in the 14th-century era.
Death of the character
In this game, the death of a character implies that he is gone forever. However, if you choose an heir, the dynasty passes on to your choice of heir, and the campaign continues with the new character. The probability is that the heir you choose is likely to be the children of the characters in this game so you can change your choice of the general if you want.
Regardless of your choice of the faction, the ultimate motto is to emerge as the Emperor of China. Players can expect a lot of similarities with Shogun 2 in this game. As far as the setting of the Chinese history is concerned, it rolls on to split between Sun Wu and Cao Wei. In the previous games of Total Wars, you may not have come across the kind of stability as shown in this game, although presuming it to be another sandbox, and it is hard to tell whether you will come across the three kingdoms or not.
Predicting the game
One of the biggest questions bothering you at this time when you anxiously wait for the release of the game is whether it will stick to the historical aspects or slip on to its character playing aspects. From what the trailers have shown until now, the latter option seems to be more valid. With legendary heroes such as Lu Bu and Guan Yu taking on to the formation of the army on their own, the game is likely to have its unique cascading features with some resemblances to the historical setting as it appears in the novel. Even though you follow the historical events just like a nerd, you will love the larger-than-life characters in the Three Kingdoms that are intrinsically tied to the story.
Total War: The Three Kingdoms Latest News
You might just question why this game did not come before as the Total War series has now been doing the rounds for about eighteen years. The Three Kingdoms referred to in this game is one in which the rival groups of warlords engaged in some of the heinous battles. The game is only a fictionalized version of the novel of the 14th century, but still has references to history. With this game, you will find that the characters are the essence, rather than the troops. Whether there is a diplomatic side to the campaign or not, is still under the cover. According to the senior designer of the game Simon Mann, “It’s one of those games that we’d always been looking forward to as an opportunity”. Whether it the twin features of the game or the gory battles, the features of the game include elements that no one would ever expect. However, it is too early to judge now as you wait for a few more months before the final release.
