Because I am new to this area please tell me if there are any major differences between these two versions.

I want to buy a tablet , some got 4.2, other version 4.4...

Does it matters in proper functioning
    What's extra version 4.4 to version 4.2 ..?

The tablet that I would be interested is version 4.2 .

    Thank you

    There is a possibility that

There is a possibility that the tablet to have an update available and often updates solve problems and result in a better functioning but u can have bad luck that after the update it will work harder or encounter other problems like battery drain faster ... So it is not a rule and in conclusion if you are satisfied with the perforamnce of the tablet, the operating system version counts the least , especially lately when there is little visible difference , or when there are not the most brilliant or rare .

EDIT : If you conclude that the operating system version ( in this case Android) matters a lot to you for various reasons , I recommend purchasing a Nexus tablet . Nexus Tablets are, and will always be the first to receive the latest official version of android , even if now you look through the descriptions and come with lower versions of android 4.0 or 4.1 !
