Even though iPhone’s camera is pretty innovative, in comparison with the professional DSLR it keeps being kind of restricted because of its inability to interchange lenses.
Since a lot of years ago, the adventurous photographers swapped to the add-on lenses from Moment and Olloclip in order to supplement the capabilities that iPhone already has and benefit from pictures with effects such as macro, telephoto, wide-angle and even fisheye. Even though this sounds great, they come with the disadvantage of reducing the quality of the image.
How can the quality of the picture be improved?
According to the granted patent recently revealed, Apple is planning to improve the add-on lenses’ quality dramatically. The company is looking to make the iPhone feature a supporting system.
US Patent No. 10,031,312 calls it a ‘small format camera system for mobile devices.’ This system will be able to apply corrections and adjustments in an automatic manner after detecting the usage of the external lens, and it aims to mitigate the factors which reduce quality.
There are two methods in which the detection of the external lens can be made possible. One of them would be for Apple to equip its iPhones with specially designed sensors while the other one, a way more clever than the first, would be for the phone to detect and make adjustments after the photo has been already taken and to optimize its quality. It can do that by processing the image taken or by altering the position of the built-in lens of the phone in a mechanical way.
A not dissimilar hardware, as Apple’s cameras still have some optical image stabilization technology, could be used to move the lens position in a way to improve its quality. And if it still is not enough, the giant tech might need to introduce an improved hardware in order to help users take full advantage of the camera of the phone.
Will Apple come up with a new product?
As stated above, we know how improved the pictures were taken with add-on lenses will be after this technology is implemented, but it is not crystal clear how Apple is going to do that without getting through so much trouble just to make a small detail better.
However, it would be great to put our hands on some official iPhone add-on lenses manufactured by Apple. And if this happens, Moment and Olloclip might suffer from a drop in revenue.
