A new project of NASA could considerably reduce the time required for a journey to Mars.
Currently, it’s estimated that a trip to Mars would take about six years. This is actually one of the main problems of programs which have in plan to send a crew on the Red planet. According to BGR, the North American space agency wants to repair this problem. In a video recently posted on YouTube, an employee within it talks about a possible solution that would significantly reduce the period in which the distance between our planet and Mars.
Specifically, this is about a propulsion system based on a laser that would be able to carry a 100 kg vehicle on Mars in just three days. A human crew, on the other hand, would be transported no less than one month. Apparently, in the propulsion system base would be an electromagnetic acceleration, instead of chemical one, used on nowadays missiles and consists in combustion. The main advantage? The fact that the electromagnetic acceleration eliminates the need of having large supplies of fuel which increases the vehicle weight.
Philip Lubin, one of those who work on this project, said that this kind of acceleration is limited only by the light speed, but would involved using a strong light source for the matter acceleration. You can learn more about it in the video above.
