Sony missed the bus when the MWC 2020 got canceled following the outbreak of the coronavirus in China and some other countries. The company decided to hold an online launch event to announce its latest smartphones including a flagship 5G phone. The smartphones announced by Sony include the Xperia 1 II, Xperia 10 II, and Xperia Pro. The II suffix is to be read as Mark Two. Here’s a brief outline of the specs and features of these devices.
Sony Xperia 1 II
This is a flagship phone with a 6.5-inch OLED display. True to tradition, it comes in a rectangular shape with an aspect ratio of 21:9. Sony calls it CinemaWide display and offers 4K HDR resolution. There is also the Motion Blur technology that helps you enjoy a 90Hz screen refresh rate. The screen gets protection from Corning Gorilla Glass 6. The rear panel is made of glass and has the same protection. The smartphone will have the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 865SoC as the processor and 8GB RAM. The internal storage in the Sony Xperia 1 II is 256GB.
Sony has fitted ZEISS brand cameras in the rear with a triple camera arrangement. All three sensors are identically rated at 12MP. The second sensor is a wide-angle lens and the third one is a telephoto lens. The front camera for selfies is 8MP.
The battery is large at 4,000mAh and it comes with wireless charging support. The phone is IP68 certified for dust and water resistance. There are two features that pull this down from being a premium offering -the fingerprint sensor is still physical on the left side of the phone and the 3.5mm jack continues to be available.
Sony Xperia 10 II
This phone’s display is not very different from the Sony Xperia 1 II except that its size is 6inches and the OLED screen has a Full HD+ resolution. The processor is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865SoC and you get only 4GBRAM support for the processor. The battery is also reduced at 3,600mAh capacity. There is no wireless charging facility.
In the optics section, while the primary sensor is the same 12MP, the other two cameras are 8MP each with similar wide-angle and telephoto functions. Other specs remain the same.
Sony Xperia Pro
Sony has used this online event to announce one more model, the Sony Xperia Pro. The only details shared by the company about this device is that it will be a 5G phone which will function in both the sub-6Hz and mmWave environments.
Now, there is no clarity on the precise release dates of these devices and Sony is yet to declare their prices as well. It has been reported that the Sony Xperia 1 II will be launched in the US market as a 4G device while in Europe it will be a 5G phone.
