Recently, many critics have expressed their concern with the latest feature designed for Snapchat, called Snap Maps. The reason for their concern is the risk it represents for user safety. The new feature basically lets users share the location in real time, on an interactive map. Indeed, only people who are mutual friends can see each other’s location, but considering the fact that there are lots of teenagers using the app, there might be some serious consequences.
Is It Really Safe?
The official description Snapchat wrote for their newest feature claims that you can see what’s going on, go on adventures or find your friends. The good thing is that you have the chance to choose whether you want to share the location with your friends or rather keep it to yourself. If you choose to share the location, then it will get updated every time you access the app.
However, the introduction of this feature has raised some eyebrows when it came to user’s safety. The risks may come from child predators or other types of criminals. The Verge has shown how people may actually not be aware of the fact that Snap is updating the location every time they open the app on the Snap Map.
Snapchat responded by saying that the safety of their users is a priority to them. As such, they want to make sure that everybody who is using Snapchat, as well as educators or parents when it comes to teenagers, are aware of the way in which the new feature works. However, for now everybody seems to be reticent to the change, since not all users want to share their location at all times. Maybe it will catch on to public or it will fail miserably, so it remains to be seen how will the feature evolve.
