Smart Keyboard Teardown Repairability Score is Zero.
Smart Keyboard is the first keyboard accessory made by Apple for their new iOS device, iPad Pro. It’s aimed to give a better typing experience on iPad Pro. Moreover, this step gives a clear message to the users that iPad Pro is an iPad with professional capabilities.
Its design is a derivative from a smart cover, which is made to be water and stain-resistant. The structure looks like a Mac Keyboard without a key function on the top.
Today, iFixit did a Smart Keyboard teardown to see the repairability score and the technology inside. These are the interesting things they found:
- Smart Keyboard definitely breaks the record for the most confusing combination keyboard/case ever. Seriously, this thing has so many sections, Apple even included a handy “guide” on how to fold it correctly.
- In order to make the Smart Keyboard water and stain-resistant, Apple encapsulated the entire accessory inside some high tech fabric.
- The brains of the operation is Apple’s latest go-to microcontroller for peripheral input devices: ST Microelectronics STM32F103VB 72 MHz 32-bit RISC ARM Cortex-M3
- Turns out, these are made of Apple’s mysterious “conductive fabric.” These connect the keyboard to the Smart Connector and allow for a “two‑way flow of power and data.”
iFixit gives the score of repairability for Apple Smart Keyboard, 0 out of 10. While durable, the keyboard is impossible to open without damaging, meaning no internal components can be replaced without destroying the device.
