A new portable X-series NVMe SSD that has support for Thunderbolt 3 has just been announced by Samsung. This new Samsung Portable SSD X5 has a bandwidth of 40Gbps, which allows it to read incredible speeds of 2,800 MB/s. Such speeds are many times faster than the SATA-based portable SSDs.
Who can take advantage of the new SSD
Because the portable SSD is particularly a Thunderbolt 3 drive, this means that it will not be compatible with those laptops that solely support USB. Therefore, in order to be able to enjoy this new exciting SSD and take advantage completely of what it can do, you will need to have a recent, high-end machine to use the X5.
What to expect from Samsung’s X5
The SSD recently introduced by the South Korean company is able to handle real-time 3D rendering, as well as 4K video editing and RAW files with a high resolution. The files that you will transfer will be using a speed of 2,300 MB/s, which means that a file of 20GB could be moved in as fast as only 12 seconds. That is clearly amazingly fast. Also, due to the fact that the metal frame of the SSD is meant to be resistant to shock, the drive can actually survive a fall of up to two meters. You can also feel safer due to the fact that the frame includes a non-slip bottom mat that is supposed to prevent accidents.
In case you decide to purchase this drive, Samsung is offering a three-year limited warranty. This new SSD comes at the price of $399.99 for the model that has 500GB, $699.99 for the model of 1TB, and $1,399.99 for the 2TB model, which is the premium version. The SSD will become available for purchase starting the 3rd of September.
