Samsung’s W2020 5G Flip Phone Gets Wi-Fi Certified

Samsung’s W2020

Samsung still hasn’t let go of the flip-phone form factor even after so many years. It releases its W series of flip phones with flagship-grade specifications in specific markets like China. The latest member of Samsung’s smart flip phone family is the Samsung SM-W2020, which is to be unveiled soon. It was recently given a green signal by the Wi-Fi Alliance that allows smartphones to have Wi-Fi connectivity.

The Samsung SM-W2020 is the successor to last year’s SM-W2019 flip phone. The latest flip phone from Samsung is expected to have up to 6 GB of RAM and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor. There are also rumors regarding a fingerprint sensor mounted on the sides, as well as a dual rear camera setup.

The approval from the Wi-Fi Alliance is a formality that every smartphone having a Wi-Fi module must go through. The alliance checks whether specific predefined standards are being met or not. They also check for interoperability between different Wi-Fi compliant devices. The Wi-Fi alliance certified the Samsung SM-W2020 for Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac dual-bands.

As usual, the alliance didn’t disclose any information regarding the specifications of the device. However, they confirmed that the device runs Android 9. There will be an Android 10 update for the device next year. The phone will have 5G capability as well. An advertisement for the Samsung W2020 was spotted in a 5G exhibition in China.

Different sources suggest that the W2020 will come with fast UFS 3.0 storage, as well as the F2FS or Flash Friendly File System which was also used in the Galaxy Note 10 smartphones by Samsung. As the W2020 is a flip phone, there will be two displays facing each other. Both the displays are expected to be 4.2 inches Full HD Super AMOLED. The displays will have a minimum screen resolution of 1920 by 1080 pixels each.

The SM-W2020 was announced last year in November just after the W2019 was released. The W2020 is expected to release around November this year, precisely one year after the release of its predecessor. The launch, however, will be limited to only specific markets since it is a niche device and is most likely to be launched only in Korea and China. The pricing of the W2020 will be in the premium range due to its flagship specifications and the niche market.
