There is no need to go after the rumors any longer. Samsung held its Galaxy Unpacked event last night to launch four of its models, the Samsung Galaxy S20, S20+, S20 Ultra and the Galaxy Z Flip, the second foldable smartphone from the South Korean major. The ideal way to look at these models is to club the Samsung Galaxy S20 and S20+ together since they have a lot of common aspects going. The other two, the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra is in a different league with a mammoth 16GB RAM and the foldable phone may be seen separately.
Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra
The specifications of the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra, the premium model in the lineup, beginning with the processor which is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC for markets like the US and the Exynos 990 for a few other regions. The 16GB RAM, as referred to above, is definitely the highlight. Undoubtedly, this is the first smartphone with 16GB RAM. Others may follow, but Samsung has taken the lead. The phone has a 6.9-inch QHD+ AMOLED display with a screen refresh rate of 120Hz. Internal storage comes in options of 128GB, 256GB and 512GB. The battery is 5,000mAh with 45W fast charging support.
The quad-camera setup in the rear has the long-awaited 108MP primary sensor which has OIS support with a 48MP secondary sensor and a 12MP ultra-wide lens and a depth sensor. A huge 40MP sensor is fitted in the front for selfies. Released in grey and black colors, this is a 5G-only device. The device is priced at $1399.
Samsung Galaxy S20 and S20+
As mentioned, the entry-level Galaxy S20 and the higher S20+ have a few common specs. Samsung has gone with the same processor on all three models. The display size on the Samsung Galaxy S20 is 6.2-inches while that for the S20+ is 6.7-inches. All three models sport the QHD+ AMOLED displays with a 120Hz screen refresh rate. While the RAM is common on both the Samsung Galaxy S20 and S20+, the storage levels are different. The internal storage on the Galaxy S20 will only be 128GB whereas the Galaxy S20+ offers options of 256GB and 512GB as well. The provision for a MicroSD slot is available on all models.
Confirming the rumors, the battery sizes are 4,000mAh and 4,500mAh respectively, for the Samsung Galaxy S20 and S20+. They have 25W fast charging support.
In the camera front, there is a minor difference between the two. The triple camera setup in the Galaxy S20 has a 12MP+64MP+12MP configuration while in the Galaxy S20+, a depth vision camera gets added to make it a quad camera setup.
There are 4G and 5G options available for these two phones. Galaxy S20 is available for $999 whereas Galaxy S20+ costs $1199.
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip
Setting aside the rumors of a possible launch three days later, Samsung released its second foldable smartphone in the clamshell type with a flip-open style. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip does not offer any surprises since there have been rumors galore on this one and most of them appear to have been correct. The 6.7-inch Infinity Flex AMOLED display, the 21.9:9 aspect ratio and the Ultra-Thin Glass, are all there. The two-piece 3,300mAh battery prediction has come true as well.
Samsung has priced the Galaxy Z Flip at $1,380.
