At first, very few believed in something that sounds so silly, ‘phablet’. Among them were the higher-ups at Samsung and with the recent success of their Galaxy Note 9, we can certainly say that they were absolutely right.
Samsung knew that not a lot of people believed in the Note. That’s why, during the New York event on Thursday, they unveiled their new phablet, the Note 9. However, they weren’t satisfied just with this. Instead, they introduced a video that featured all sorts of reactions to the original Note from 2011.
That’s when people first introduced the notion of the ‘phablet’, part ‘phone’, part ‘tablet’. A big part of the reason why is represented by the 5.3-inched display deemed too spacious by some users. From comparing the phone to a piece of toast to saying that Samsung has no idea what it’s doing, anything was tackled in that video.
It did better than everyone expected
The Note flagships were incredibly controversial. While many felt that it won’t fly in today’s market, there were still a lot of people that believed in it. However, nobody expected the Galaxy Note to become so successful and while Samsung’s phone wasn’t the first one to be over-sized (Dell had an attempt but it was very short-lived) they are the only ones that made it happen.
Thanks to the success that the Galaxy Note products had we observed that a lot of manufacturers started to make wider phones. Today, your average smartphone is bigger than what was considered a phablet in 2011. The new Galaxy Note has a 6.4-inched screen and although that’s quite big, by today’s standards it’s not too big.
Why does it still exist?
With the appearance of Samsung S9 and S9 Plus, you might be wondering why Samsung continues to make the Note family. Well, apparently there are a lot of people who prefer a screen as large as possible, and they represent the targeted audience for this product. The Note’s users compare the phone’s screen with a canvas and the company felt like they deserve to allow their users to have their desired canvas.
In time, the designed changed. It kept getting bigger until it reached equilibrium, slowly getting rid of the bezel aesthetic and its height increased as well. So that’s why now the Samsung Galaxy Note 9, although it has a screen of 6.4 inches it is actually narrower than the first Note who had 5.3 inches.
