The new Samsung Galaxy J8 was officially unveiled on May 21 in India, but it’s not available for purchasing yet. One of the key features of the device is the Infinity Display screen, which makes its first appearance in the J series of the Samsung family. The phone is also the first one, along with the recently launched Galaxy J6, to have software buttons for navigation purposes. In this article, we are going to take a closer look at the most important aspects of this smartphone.
Infinity Display and Chat Over Video App
Galaxy J8 will be available in three different colors: blue, gold and black. Samsung users will get almost 15% more display area with the new Infinity design, while the overall size of the phone will remain the same. This is due to the very thin bezels that create the effect of a continuous surface with no harsh angles. The phone comes with a 6-inch full-HD+Super AMOLED display that flows from edge-to-edge. This panel has 18.5:9 aspect ratio and a resolution of 720 pixels by 1440 pixels, which provides an unparalleled viewing experience through the more profound contrasts, as well as greater browsing space.
Another new feature, called “Chat Over Video”, allows users to chat while watching videos thanks to a translucent chat window and keyboard. Since Galaxy J8 is a mid-range smartphone, it features a plastic unibody design. It’s worth mentioning that this phone has a Face Unlock option that provides additional security and a fingerprint sensor, which is located at the back of the device. Other sensors of the phone are Proximity Sensor, Ambient Light Sensor, and Accelerometer.
The phone is equipped with a dual rear camera that has a primary sensor of 16MP with an aperture of f/1.7 and a secondary sensor of 5MP with an aperture of f/1.9, responsible for depth-of-field effects. The front camera has 16MP with an aperture of f/1.9. These low-aperture lenses allow users to take clear photos in low-light environments. Both back and front cameras have a single LED flash. The adjustable selfie flash on the front camera gives consumers the opportunity to adjust the exposure while capturing selfies. A flagship feature, Live Focus, allows you to take beautiful portraits with background blur that can be adjusted by the dual camera while or after taking pictures.
Performance, Battery, and Storage
The dual-SIM (Nano) Samsung Galaxy J8 comes with Android 8.0 Oreo and it’s powered by the octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 SoC along with 4GB of RAM. The internal storage of 64GB can be expanded up to 256GB via a microSD card. One noticeable feature is Samsung’s advanced memory management, which automatically transfers to the external memory card all the content from social media applications. The smartphone is equipped with a non-removable 3500mAh battery. Galaxy J8 has the following connectivity options: a micro-USB port, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 4G VoLTE, GPS/ A-GPS and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
Other Key Features
The new Samsung phone employs Artificial Intelligence features like scene and object detection. An app called Samsung Mall is using AI to help users shop online by tapping on pictures of desired items and showing the results for the most popular products. The user interface that comes with Samsung Galaxy J8 is Samsung Experience, which was designed to support consumers in everything they do on their phones.
Availability and Price
As we mentioned before, Galaxy J8 has been launched in India and is not available for purchase yet. According to the company, it will be available starting with July, but an exact date was not revealed. The price for the Indian market is set at INR 18,990, which represents approximately $280. Samsung is also offering a promotional feature, “One Time Screen Replacement Offer” for purchases made before 20th of June, which applies only to India.
Taking into consideration both old and new features, as well as the moderate price, we believe that Samsung Galaxy J8 is a good choice for a wide range of users. The multifunctional cameras with all the available options come in handy for the amateur photographers. But not only that. Social media users will find it very easy to chat and browse through their phones, thanks to the newly developed “Chat Over Video” app. We are waiting with great anticipation for the official release in other parts of the world.
