Samsung’s struggles in the Chinese smartphone market may take an interesting turn when the South Korean company launches a new device soon, namely the Samsung Galaxy A71 5G. These are rumors at this stage, but there are enough hints of a mid-segment device being developed by the company with the China market in focus. There are widespread expectations that the demand for 5G smartphones may explode, come 2020 and Samsung may not want to miss the opportunity. Samsung already has another 5G device, the Samsung W20 5G, but it is a premium foldable device and even if sold, it may not stack up the numbers.
Samsung Galaxy A71 5G May Sport the Exynos 980
The report on this development of Samsung developing a 5G smartphone model for the Chinese market has relied on certain internal codes and other leaked inputs. The model’s internal code is supposedly SM-A7160. Now, going by a series of deductions based on the codes Samsung employs for models developed for the international markets and for China, it has been concluded that the internal product code SM-A7160 must denote the Samsung Galaxy A71 5G for the Chinese market. (Samsung had used the number SM-N976B for global markets for the Galaxy Note 10+ 5G while the same phone for the China market was carrying a model number SM-N9760). There is every likelihood that the new phone model Samsung is planning to launch in the Chinese market will be the Samsung Galaxy A71 5G.
The other significant point being reported through this leak/rumor is that the new phone will be fitted with an Exynos 980. This device may be the first from Samsung’s stable to sport this chipset. This 5G integrated SoC is expected to feature in a Vivo smartphone. The Exynos 980 is an octa-core processor developed on the 8nm platform. Unlike the Exynos 9825, which has to be coupled with a 5G modem, the Exynos 980 is an integrated chipset. It can support up to 108MP cameras and is compatible with the latest Wi-Fi 6. It keeps the overall manufacturing costs down for the smartphone maker.
The rumors indicate that the proposed Samsung Galaxy A71 5G smartphone will have 128GB onboard storage, the Mali G-76 GPU. There is very little else known about this phone now. Samsung had stopped making phones in China, shifting some volumes to other countries like Vietnam. It is not clear if this new device meant for the Chinese market will be built in China itself are imported from outside China.
With the buildup to the Chinese New Year in January, this may be the right time to capture the market.
