Are you shopping around for a new phone? If you are, you’ll probably include the OnePlus 3T and the Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) in your list of possible choices. Both of these feature some of the latest features that OnePlus and Samsung can offer, making them a great choice for almost everyone.
The question now is this: which of these two phones are the right choice for you? You can use this guide to choose the option that best suits your needs and lifestyle.
Build and Dimensions
The OnePlus 3T is a bit larger and heavier than the Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017). It weighs 5.57 oz and measures 6.01 x 2.94 x 0.29 inches, while the A5 2017 weighs 5.54 oz and measures 5.75 x 2.81 x 0.31 inches. The former has a 5.5-inch Optic AMOLED capacitive touchscreen, while the latter comes with a 5.2-inch Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen. Both screens have a 1080 x 1920 resolution, although the Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) has a bigger pixel density at 424 ppi (the 3T has only 401 ppi).
Both have elegant and attractive construction. The 3T is built with “premium space-grade aluminum alloy”, while the A5 2017 features a glass front and back and aluminum sides that have a color-matched finish for a uniform look. The former comes in three colors (Gunmetal and limited-edition Midnight Black, plus Soft Gold for the Indian market only), while the latter is available in four colors (Black Sky, Gold Sand, Blue Mist, and Peach Cloud).
The two phones are built with Corning Gorilla Glass 4, but the Galaxy A5 (2017) has something that the OnePlus 3T doesn’t: IP68 certification and a body that’s dust-proof and waterproof up to 1.5 meters and up to a maximum of 30 minutes.
The Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) comes with an Exynos 7880 Octa chip and a Mali-T830MP3 GPU, which allow it to have great performance, especially when compared to older models and lower-end phones. However, the OnePlus 3T is faster and more powerful than the A5 2017, with its Qualcomm MSM8996 Snapdragon 821 processor and Adreno 530 GPU.
Both are running on Android Marshmallow, and both can be upgraded to Android Nougat. The 3T has a bigger RAM (6 GB compared to the A5 2017’s 3 GB RAM) and comes with a bigger internal storage (64 GB and 128 GB compared to the A5 2017’s 32 GB). However, Samsung’s latest mid-range phone makes up for it with its microSD card slot that can accommodate up to 256 GB.
Both models are equipped with fast charging, which means you can get either phone’s battery full in just a short while. The OnePlus 3T has a slightly bigger battery capacity; it has a 3,400 mAH battery, while the Galaxy A5 (2017) comes with a 3,300 mAH battery.

If you’re a big fan of the Samsung brand and love the form factor of its phones, you’ll definitely want to choose the Galaxy A5 (2017). But, if you want the device with the better specs, you won’t go wrong with the OnePlus 3T.
