We now live in a world where VR headsets are becoming more and more popular. They are the new best thing in the gaming world, and in the future, their use as entertainment devices will only get better. However, if you are someone that wants to buy a VR headset but does not know what you should choose, we are here to help you. The price tag of a device is not always an absolute guarantee that it will fit your needs. Today we will be looking at the best and worst qualities of Oculus Go, Oculus Rift, and Samsung Gear VR. It is up to you to make a choice and our only hope is that this article will help you in choosing a device.
The first thing that we would like to get out of the way is the price tag for each of these three devices. Samsung Gear VR is the cheapest of the three, coming up at only 90 dollars. Oculus Go is more expensive, coming up at around 200 dollars for the 32GB version and 270 dollars for the 64GB version. Oculus Rift is the most expensive out of the three, costing almost 400 dollars at the moment.
Each device comes with a unique design but they each shape the way in which the VR experience is going to be felt by the user. We are going to talk about each headset on its own.
Starting with the cheapest out of the three, Samsung Gear VR offers an entry-level virtual reality experience. And there is also a catch with this device: you can only use it if you connect it to a phone. On the bright side, this gives you the option to play with over one thousand games and apps. On the other hands, there are only a limited number of smartphones that you can connect to this headset. So far, the list of smartphones included the S9 and S9+, Note 8, S8 and S8+, S7, S7 Edge, A8 and A8+, S6 and S6 Edge, and Note 5.
Oculus Go is a tad different from the Gear VR, in the sense that the headset is powered by a Snapdragon 821 processor. The good thing about Oculus Go is that it was designed to be compatible with apps that are made for Samsung Gear VR. Apart from those experiences, the headset also comes with over 100 apps that were designed specifically for this headset.
The Oculus Rift gives one of the most beneficial VR experiences and rightfully so. This VR headset only works if it is constantly connected to a PC. And you can’t just plug it into a regular PC and expect it to work; the headset needs a pretty strong gaming computer to work correctly. What makes Oculus Rift different is the fact that it comes with two touch controllers whereas the other two only have one each.
Audio wise, Samsung Gear VR is perhaps the weakest out of the whole bunch since it relies solely on the audio of the smartphone that it is connected to. Oculus Go goes one step ahead by having an integrated speaker system in place which offers sound through the head straps. Oculus Rift is perhaps the fanciest out of the bunch since it comes with a 360 surround spatial audio which is possible through integrated headphones. This VR headset also has an integrated microphone to make communication during gaming much more accessible.
As we perhaps got you used to by now, Samsung Gear VR relies on the smartphone that it is connected to work which means that it also relies on the processing power and the resolution of the device as well. This translates to the device being able to offer a maximum of 1024 x 1024 resolution with a 60Hz refresh rate.
Oculus Go is a bit more powerful, clocking in a 2560 x 1440 WQHD resolution with a maximum of 72Hz refresh rate. Last but not least, Oculus Rift offers the most with a 2160 x 1200 resolution and a maximum of 90Hz refresh rate.
Which are you going to buy?
If you read this article and you are still undecided about which headset to buy then we have a couple of suggestions. If you want to experience one of the most immersive and engaging gaming experiences, then you should probably go for Oculus Rift since it offers the most out of them all, even if it cost more.
If you are looking for a well-rounded experience but do not have 400 dollars to dish out for the Oculus Rift, then we recommend that you choose Oculus Go. After all, you must choose the device that fits your needs the best.
