While OnePlus smartphones might not be so popular in the Western world yet, the Chinese company did gather quite the fanbase. And with their future project OnePlus 5 being in the works right now, many owners of older models such as the OnePlus 2, OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T were very delighted to find out that their devices will be getting the new Android Nougat update soon. However, one particular model in this list has been dropped out of Android support for good. Sadly, we’re talking about the OnePlus 2.
Owners of the device have expressed vocal disappointment in this decision, especially after initially being announced that their devices, although aging, are getting the Android Nougat treatment after all. It’s only understandable why many of them were very disappointed when they found out that that is no longer the case.
Naturally, OnePlus 2 patrons immediately demanded an explanation, which the Chinese company delivered alongside their sincerest apologies. The problem with the OnePlus 2 is that it cannot support Android as they initially thought. The smartphone initially qualified for the update due to it still being in Google’s 2 year Android support frame. However, OnePlus simply don’t have the infrastructure for it. That’s very unfortunate news, but these things do happen.
On top of that, they also failed to assemble a developer team for the OnePlus 2’s update to Android 7.0 Nougat, so there’s that. And they now have to focus all their resources in optimizing the OnePlus 3 and 3T for the new OS, as well as the upcoming OnePlus 5. The OnePlus 5 is actually the fourth installment in the series, but as the number 4 is considered tremendously unlucky, the company decided to skip the number altogether for its line, to the delight of many.
