Samsung Display is reportedly working towards the development of foldable OLED display panels for different smartphone manufacturing companies. These foldable panels will comprise an in-folding design and will be sent to companies like Oppo, Xiaomi, and Google.
According to a report published in TheElec, Oppo, Xiaomi, and Google plan to launch smartphones featuring foldable panels towards the latter half of the year. The same report mentions that Oppo’s LED panel will have a clamshell design and it will be possible to fold it from top to bottom.
When unfolded, the size of the display screen is 7.7 inches. The outer display screen boasts of a size ranging from 1.5 to 2 inches. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip, which was introduced in the market last year, had a 6.7-inch foldable display screen that was smaller than the one on the Oppo device.
In 2020, Oppo had introduced a 7.7-inch foldable screen prototype. The foldable phone had an in-folding design and came armed with under-display camera technology. This device also boasted high-end camera features like a continuous optical zoom module, 10x optical zoom, and 100x digital zoom. Apart from that, the phone also featured 65W wireless and 125W wired charging technologies. This move taken by the company was a symbolic representation of it investing in futuristic technology, the kind that has not been tapped into by its rivals so far.
The foldable screen prototype was procured from and produced in collaboration with Samsung Display, Visionox, and BOE. But now, Samsung is the only company that is acting as its supplier. Meanwhile, Xiaomi has also opted for a folding design and has plans to introduce a foldable smartphone in the market which would feature an 8.03-inch display. The outer screen of the device, which is expected to be 6.38 inches wide, will be manufactured by Samsung Display and CSOT.
Google has also reportedly asked Samsung to manufacture a foldable OLED panel which should be 7.6 inches wide. Today, folding screens seem to have become more popular than out-folding panels. One of the major reasons behind this is the fact that it is a lot more convenient to source out the curvature that is required for the panel to fold using the out folding method. Since Samsung has a considerable amount of experience in manufacturing foldable panels, these companies have placed their faith in it for providing them with these.
