Mi Air Charge Technology by Xiaomi Offers a Completely Wire-free Charging Experience to its Users

For several years now, Xiaomi has managed to retain its reputation of being a brand that thinks ahead and is always at the forefront when it comes to bringing new technology to consumers. On several occasions, the company has taken initiatives that have served as a testimony to this fact. The Mi MIX was the first-ever smartphone that sparked an interest in consumers about bezel-less devices. With the introduction of the 80W wireless charging technology, it became a pioneer in charging technology as well.

Now, with the newly launched Mi Air Charge Technology, users can charge multiple and varied electronic devices at one go without requiring a cable or a wireless charging stand.

Xiaomi has stated that it has secured a patent on Mi Air Charge Technology that works with the support of a box-like device developed by the company. The device uses beamforming technology to transmit millimeter waves across the device. These millimeter waves are into electric power that is used in getting the device charged.

The box features 5 phase-detection antennas that prove to be very effective in determining the position or location of a smartphone or for that matter, any device that is compatible with it. What is notable is the fact that it accomplishes this task in just a few milliseconds. It also features as many as 144 beamforming antennas that are used to transfer millimeter waves.

Two antenna arrays, resembling the ones you find in the charging device but are much smaller, are fitted in the phone. One of them is the beacon array that establishes communication with the charging tower. The second one is the receiving antenna array that is built with 14 antennas. These antennas receive the millimeter waves which go through the process of being converted into electric power through a special circuit and helps in charging the device.

Xiaomi has also launched a brief video that offers a quick glimpse of this new technology. The video also gives one an overview of the box-like device that supports this technology.

Xiaomi has also stated that Mi Air Charge Technology enables the charging of several devices simultaneously at an optimum power of 5W per device. While it is a little slow as compared to the speed offered by its 80W wireless technology, it must be remembered that Xiaomi is currently focussing on promoting home appliances and smaller-sized devices than smartphones.

According to a post written by Adam Zeng Xuezhong (Xiaomi’s mobile division head) on Weibo, the company is planning on introducing Mi Air Charge Technology also to wearable products like fitness trackers and smartwatches. There is also a possibility of this technology being used to charge a host of devices that one finds at everybody’s homes like a desk lamp or a set of speakers. As stated by the company, the primary goal behind putting together this technology is to encourage most people to go wireless for their charging needs.
