A patent application, the details of which have come to the fore recently, shows that Apple is marching ahead in its quest for discovering a ‘folding camera’ for the iPhone. For some time now, Apple has been working towards developing a ‘folding camera’ for an iPhone model that it hopes to launch in the near future.
According to reports, Apple was actively hunting for a supplier that can provide it with a periscope lens. The discovery of the new patent application strongly indicates that the technical force at Apple is working diligently towards putting this new technology together as soon as possible. According to the research done by Apple in the past, a folding lens system can minimize the camera bump on the rear end of the iPhones. Since Apple has been studying this technology for a long time, it holds multiple patents on it.
The most recent patent application done by Apple is a “Camera Including Two Light Folding Elements”. The patented technology aims to strike a balance between coming up with an improved camera without compromising on the small form factor of devices like an iPhone or an iPad.
In its patent application, Apple has stated that the emergence of smaller sized, multi-utility devices like smartphones, pad devices and tablets has led towards the demand for high-resolution cameras for small form factor devices. These cameras ought to be compact, lightweight, and have the ability to capture high-quality or high-resolution images at low f-numbers. An f-number of an optical device is the ratio of the focal length of the system to the entrance pupil’s diameter.
Due to the restrictions in conventional camera technology, the regular camera devices used in such phones end up capturing images at much lower resolutions. The image quality is much lower than the kind that could be captured with better quality cameras.
Apple states that it required a photosensor with a smaller pixel size and a robust but compact imaging lens system. While these kinds of devices have come to the market, there is a need for better-quality camera-based devices that would be in line with modern-day technology.
Apple’s patent application happens to be a lens system that could be configured on the camera to tilt independently on one or more axes. The proposal also offers a variety of combinations with regards to the type and the number of lenses.
