Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg Criticizes Apple – Claims Its Privacy Changes are Anti-Competitive and Not Inclusive

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, during a conference call regarding quarterly earnings of the company, criticized the recently announced privacy changes of Apple by stating that the company’s focus is on getting an advantage over its competitors and not developing the kind of policies or technology that would aid user privacy.

As Apple made an announcement of its quarterly earnings, CEO Mark Zuckerberg got into a conversation with leading analysts and used the opportunity to come down heavily on the privacy features of the iOS 14. He referred to the global tech giant as one of the “biggest competitors” of Facebook and said that the Cupertino based company takes undue advantage of its power and authority to dominate other companies.

According to ZDNet, Zuckerberg stated, “We have a lot of competitors who make claims about privacy that are often misleading.”

Zuckerberg further said that Facebook has many competitors who confidently claim several things about privacy on the internet but most of those claims tend to be “misleading”.

“Now, Apple recently released so-called nutrition labels, which focused largely on metadata that apps collect rather than the privacy and security of people’s actual messages”, he said further criticizing the company.

Zuckerberg tried to add weight to his argument by stating how the Messages app stores of Apple, by default, stores backups of the users’ messages. He said that this directly implied that Apple, along with government agencies, can easily access the private messages of most users. Zuckerberg confidently stated that as far as protecting messages are concerned, WhatsApp, which is now a part of the Facebook family, is far more superior than other messaging apps.

Zuckerberg also spoke about why iMessage, the messaging service by Apple, enjoys so much popularity globally, especially in the United States.

“ iMessage is a key linchpin of their ecosystem. It comes pre-installed on every iPhone, and they prefer it with private APIs and permissions, which is why iMessage is the most used messaging service in the US”, he stated.

For a while, Facebook has been lobbying against the removal of IFDA (Identifier For Advertisers). While Google has confirmed that it will convert all the apps in its library with the help of the SKAdNetwork.
