Leaked Images of Sony ‘Xperia Compact’ Show it Could be a Potential Competitor to iPhone 12 Mini

Measuring 5.4-inches, the iPhone 12 mini is one of the most compact devices in the premium smartphone space today. While there are reports about the model registering a decline in sales, market reports suggest that the iPhone 12 mini has been received warmly by consumers. According to reports, most people who have purchased it and have used it for a good amount of time speak positively about it.

There are a couple of reasons as to why the sales of the iPhone 12 mini has been slower than regular iPhone models launched recently like the iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max. In the last couple of years, the way and the reasons why people use their smartphone has changed drastically. While some prefer to carry a compact phone when moving around, there are many who don’t mind carrying a slightly bulky phone as long as it allows them to do multiple things on it like watching movies, doing video calls, and so on.

The market forces have also evolved at a rapid pace. Apple recently made inroads in countries like China where, traditionally, larger-sized phones have been more successful. In countries like these, one wouldn’t have expected a device like the iPhone 12 mini to take a flying start.

The size of the iPhone 12 mini reminds one of the time when the earliest versions of smartphones arrived in the market. The first-ever launched iPhone featured a 3.5-inch display screen. The devices which featured a display screen whose size ranged between 4-5 inch were referred to as ‘phablets’ – slightly bigger than a phone but smaller than a tablet. However, that was a time when people largely used a phone to make calls and exchange messages. Now, the need for carrying out multimedia activities has made a large number of people invest in phones featuring a large-sized screen.

Despite the popularity of larger-sized phones, a device like the iPhone 12 mini has found acceptance among a group of consumers who prefer a phone which is light in weight, easy to hold, and convenient to carry around. Ever since this particular model was launched, there were murmurs in the market about whether a similarly sized Android phone would come up as a rival to this Apple device in the near future. For months, there was no news of a rival company launching a ‘mini’ or compact-sized phone.

Until now.

On Sunday, tech leaker SteverHemmerstoffer (@Onleaks) put up leaked images of Sony’s upcoming phone, the Compact Xperia. If one goes by the images, it is a 5.5-inch phone that’s relatively smaller in size than its predecessor Xperia XZ1 that was launched in 2017.

With measurements of 140 x 68.9 x 8.9mm, the phone is marginally larger than the iPhone 12 mini. Whenever it is launched in the market, it will be one of the smallest smartphones around and expected to be a tough rival to the iPhone 12 mini.

In the past, phones like the Pixel 5 have been compared to the iPhone 12 but then, most of these phones have been relatively larger than the Apple device. Samsung came up with a seemingly compact phone in the form of the Galaxy S20 but when measured, it turned to be an inch larger than the iPhone 12 mini.

The 5.5-inch Xperia Compact is expected to feature a flat-display screen that’s bordered by thick bezels and a chin. Also featured on the phone is an 8-megapixel selfie camera that is positioned within its notch. Towards the back, one can find a dual-lens setup including a 13-megapixel primary camera.

The power button has a fingerprint sensor, resembling the Touch ID on the last launched version of iPad Air, embedded within it. On the top of the device, there is a 3.5-mm mini-jack for the benefit of those who like using wired headphones.

Apart from the aforementioned information, not much is known about the yet to be launched compact phone by Sony. But, the fact that Sony decided to release a small form factor phone shortly after the launch of the iPhone 12 mini gives one an inkling that the Japan-based multinational company plans to compete with Apple in this space.
