Apple Watch 6: iOS 14 Will Bring the Blood Oxygen Detection Feature

Published

Even as the Apple Watch has gained popularity due to its electrocardiogram (ECG) function and in saving lives, there’s another feature in the device that will soon gain attraction. This is the blood oxygen detection feature and though the Apple Watch has been built with it, users could not benefit from it. This may be due to lack of awareness or the absence of the matching software or both. However, Apple is taking care of this through the next firmware version iOS 14.

Apple Watch 6 May Bring the Feature to the Fore

As mentioned, the blood oxygen detection feature has been present in the smartwatch from Apple Watch 4 onwards. The new inclusion in the iOS source code will ensure that the feature is active and helps the user benefit from it. For a normal and healthy individual, the blood oxygen level should be 95% to 100%. When this level drops below 80%, the individual could be affected by conditions like brain and heart functioning being compromised. If the low levels of blood oxygen continue untreated, there could be more serious consequences such as cardiac arrest.

Apple watch ios 14Apple will most likely integrate the software features in both iOS 14 as well as watchOS 7. Both the updated firmware will be released for public use this Fall or whenever the company decides to hold its annual event. The event is more popular for the release of the next set of iPhones and this year the iPhone 12 series is likely to be 5G phones, the first from Apple.

ECG Upgrade on the Cards as Well

Though the ECG feature on the Apple Watch is functioning well and has been a hit with the users, Apple seems to have spotted a shortcoming in it. In particular, the ECG readings are considered inconclusive in the Apple Watch 4 and 5. This happens when the heart rate is above 100 beats per minute. Usually, the range at which the ECG is found to be incorrect is when the heart rate is between 100 and 120 beats per minute. The company is incorporating an upgrade to the ECG app and this issue should be fixed once it is installed. Reports indicate Apple is planning to add a Sleep app as well in the Apple Watch ecosystem which will track the sleep patterns and can generate the report based on the settings the user chooses.

Apple Watch is easily the most selling smartwatch in the world and leaves its nearest rival Samsung far behind.

Apple Watch Could be Priced Cheaper if the Company Succeeds in Making the Casing in a Plastic Composite

  • Apple is planning on broadening the customer base for Apple Watch by reducing prices
  • The Company has filed a patent for a new casing made out of ceramic fiber
  • Some of the inside components too can be made of this plastic composite if the patent gets the approval

Apple has been working on making its products affordable by a larger section of the population that it is able to service currently. The Apple Watch is a unique product and is the largest selling smartwatch worldwide. It is, however, considered a premium product starting around $400 which may be beyond the reach of many. The company is now working on an alternative casing material to the stainless steel, aluminum or titanium which are currently under use. A patent has been applied for, which reveals the details of this proposal.

Is the New Casing Material Technically Equivalent?

The challenge before Apple is to find the cheaper alternative casing material that offers the same or better properties for the application. A smartwatch is a device that goes far beyond just telling the time. It is a full-fledged electronic device that reads pulses and in the case of Apple Watch, carries out an ECG.

The casing has to be made of such material that can transmit the electromagnetic signals both ways. Once this purpose is served, it should be easy to fabricate and be less expensive. Apple’s patent application appears to explain all these aspects in detail going into the micro-level of the technology. What is proposed in the patent is a weave made of ceramic fibers. The exact description as it appears is

“Ceramic Weave for Low-Cost, Structural, Antenna-Permeable Watch Case,” US Patent No. 20200096948.

This weave will have an epoxy or other matrix material which gives it the strength needed and the ability to withstand shocks. The resultant material would be referred to as a composite.

Apple is known for filing thousands of patents in a year. A majority of them may not be followed through to their logical end. Once an idea is floated within its organization, the company would want to patent it and hold the rights. Some of these patented technologies find their way into their products making them unique and the company extracts the premium for it as well.

iPhone 12 – Will Apple Do Away with the Notch? Rumor Claims So

Published

  •  An image shows a schematic diagram with the components hidden below the top bezel.
  • There is a 12MP front camera, the proximity sensor, microphone, and speaker and the IR camera.
  • The story requires an official confirmation because, with six months to go for the spring event, it is doubtful the phone is already in existence

An iPhone Without the Notch?

The notch on the display screens of smartphones has always been a subject of debate ever since it was first introduced. The earlier phones used to have prominent foreheads and chins and whatever components had to be housed in them posed no issues. The bezel sizes got reduced to offer maximum real estate on the screen when the user is watching a video or playing games.

Apple brought in the notch in 2017 with the iPhone X. If you go by this claim by Svetapple through its leaked renders, then they have found the evidence within the iOS 14 code that confirms the arrangement where there is no notch in the front display. It may be true, but then it may not be as well.

Design Frozen Do Early?

Going by the normal practice, Apple will first have several designs before it takes its own time to adopt some and rejecting the others. If the event is held in September, the shipments will commence in October. The start of commercial production will not be before July/August at best. This year things have been far from normal. With China in lockdown mode since December 2019/January 2020, major delays can be anticipated. Under these circumstances, it does appear to be a little too early for an iPhone 12 in the finished form to be rendered. If it is one of the design choices being considered by Apple at this stage, it can be taken as a possibility.

This could add to the other new developments in the iPhone 12 models like the ToF 3D sensor and the sensor-shifting camera stabilization feature. There may certainly be more such rumors between now and the time the devices get unveiled by Apple. There are questions on the timing as well and nothing can be said with surety till the Coronavirus issue gets fully resolved.

  • Fresh rumors claim mass production of Apple’s iPhone 9 and iPhone 9 Plus has commenced
  • The device could probably be announced online by April if we don’t see an update on or before March 31
  • iPhone 9 will most likely have the same design and form factor as iPhone 8
  • The Facial ID feature won’t be part of the iPhone 9

Ending months and even years of speculation, it is now being claimed that Apple’s successor to the iPhone 8, the iPhone 9, will start shipping very soon. The device is under mass production currently and you should not be surprised if the company makes the announcement before March 31, 2020. At best, it could be April, not beyond that. It is also suggested that there is now no confusion on the name of the model either, it’s going to be the iPhone 9.

Are There Any Fresh Rumors on the Specifications?

There are no new revelations on the specifications of the iPhone 9.

The phone will follow the external design and form factor of the iPhone 8. The display will be 4.7-inches in size and the bezels will all be there. Bezel sizes have not been reduced as was anticipated by fans. There will be the physical home button which will also function as the fingerprint sensor. The Touch ID technology will be very much in action. There won’t be any Facial ID feature on this device.

The camera section on the iPhone 9 is tipped to have just a single 12MP shooter. Rumors say an identical 12MP sensor will come fitted as the front camera as well. The A13 Bionic chipset is going to be a game-changer along with 3GB RAM and 64GB onboard storage. Another 128GB variant is also expected to be launched along with this.

There is no definite information on the battery size and whether there will be fast charging support to it. The general expectation is that the battery size will be bumped to handle the increasing power requirement with the new and improved processor. The operating system is likely to be the iOS 13.4 version and will get upgraded to the iOS 14 when the new software version is released later in the year.

Will There Be iPhone 9 Plus As Well?

The rumors go on to predict that while all the attention has been on the iPhone 9, Apple is going to launch an iPhone 9 Plus model as well. There have been very little by way of rumors and leaks on this model. If it is going to be the successor to the iPhone 8 Plus, then the display size could be 5.5-inches. The camera setup in the rear could see a dual-sensor arrangement. There should be no doubt that the A13 Bionic chipset will be fitted on this model too. There is a case for increasing the RAM to 4GB or at least add a 4GB variant with the 256GB onboard storage. The battery will have to be larger than the 2,700mAh unit found on the iPhone 8 Plus.

What is the Launch Date of the iPhone 9 and iPhone 9 Plus?

There are no official release dates for these models but we can expect them to be announced before the end of April.

The only debate that’s going around is when Apple will be releasing the device in the market, particularly since it is being confirmed that its mass production has commenced. The company just announced its iPad Pro models without any fanfare. It was just a media release and the pre-orders started immediately. Will it follow the same pattern with the iPhone 9 too? You will have to wait to know the answer to this.

What Could Be The Price of the iPhone 9 and 9 Plus?

The rumors have continued to hold that Apple will fix a price of $399 for the 64GB variant of the iPhone 9. The 128GB variant may be sold at $449. There are no indications of what the prices of the iPhone 9 Plus would be.
