Samsung’s monthly production is projected to be at 600 thousand units per month by May 2020. The company plans to expand its foldable display manufacturing capacity to around a million units per month by the end of the year.

Currently, the Korean tech giant produces 260,000 foldable screens a month. Samsung’s sources indicate that the Chinese smartphone manufacturers are asking for more flexible displays from Samsung Display. The Korean giant plans to expand its manufacturing facilities in Vietnam to meet the production demand. This is not just for the Galaxy Fold smartphones but also for other businesses and companies that work on the folding display technology.

Philoptics, the display equipment manufacturer, plans to provide equipment worth $13.8 million and $5.84 million by the end of May and June respectively, according to the official announcements it has made. At present, Philoptics is the only cutting equipment providing company supplying to Samsung Display. It provides the main equipment used to produce foldable displays for Samsung phones. While the manufacturing of foldable screens is pretty close to how OLED displays are manufactured, on adding components and materials, it varies when it comes to producing the display module.

Samsung wants to take this opportunity to take advantage of its OLED panel manufacturing competitors like BOE and LG in a declining phase of its smartphone market. Right now, the business is breaking through in foldable displays as Ultra-Thin Glass (UTG), which can bend and provide greater scratch protection than plastic layers, has been developed.

Samsung is utilizing foldable displays from last year for its Galaxy Fold and Galaxy Z Flip. The business plan is to bring the Galaxy Fold’s successor later this year which will feature Ultra-Thin Glass, which is also used in the Galaxy Z Flip.

If Samsung’s expansion of this segment of smartphones is truly accomplished, then the technological progress the company is currently focused on will be greatly rewarded. The South Korean company is expected to introduce the second galaxy Fold with better design and specifications later this year.

The Sims 5 – Will the Coronavirus Affect the Release date?

Published

on

Sims 5

  • With a California lockdown, there’s no way Maxis Studios will be working
  • There’s complete uncertainty on when this virus would go away and normal operations resumed
  • Even if the developer and publisher get ready, how comfortable will the market be in receiving a new game and ordering it?
  • It’s going to be a challenge for Maxis and EA to release the Sims 5

The Coronavirus pandemic refuses to go away. With every passing day, most countries including the United States are reporting an increase in the number of people affected by the virus and the number of deaths. Though the President of the United States has expressed his personal desire to have the lockdown lifted before Easter, many experts don’t agree with him. It may fall on the Governor of the respective states to take the call when push comes to shove.

How Will Maxis Cope with the Situation?

There cannot be any doubt that the development studio where Maxis is working on the Sims 5 game would be currently shut down. Many of the technical staff, including the developers, would have been asked to work from home.

The larger question would be “Can people work in isolation and develop a game like the Sims 5“?

It sounds highly unlikely.

The main reason for this is the very nature of the activities involved is collaborative. It’s a team activity. Each member of the team would be assigned the task of building the game through graphics and the back-end software. These may be in modules and later pooled together.

What is the Tearing Hurry?

On occasions like these, any corporate body will do a brainstorming on which part of their daily work schedule is the priority and which can be deferred. As argued several times in the past, the current game, Sims 4 is doing reasonably well and there are new Expansion Packs in the pipeline. Fans are looking forward to the new game but the studio can afford to wait.

Where Can They Sell The Sims 5?

Almost the entire world is in the grip of the pandemic caused by the Coronavirus. Europe has suddenly become the epicenter with the number of deaths being reported each day rising beyond imagination. The economic cost of all these will be enormous. Even the optimistic person will say it will take at least six months after the situation comes to normal for the economies to recover. EA will think thrice before releasing the Sims 5 under these conditions.

Apple Watch Could be Priced Cheaper if the Company Succeeds in Making the Casing in a Plastic Composite

  • Apple is planning on broadening the customer base for Apple Watch by reducing prices
  • The Company has filed a patent for a new casing made out of ceramic fiber
  • Some of the inside components too can be made of this plastic composite if the patent gets the approval

Apple has been working on making its products affordable by a larger section of the population that it is able to service currently. The Apple Watch is a unique product and is the largest selling smartwatch worldwide. It is, however, considered a premium product starting around $400 which may be beyond the reach of many. The company is now working on an alternative casing material to the stainless steel, aluminum or titanium which are currently under use. A patent has been applied for, which reveals the details of this proposal.

Is the New Casing Material Technically Equivalent?

The challenge before Apple is to find the cheaper alternative casing material that offers the same or better properties for the application. A smartwatch is a device that goes far beyond just telling the time. It is a full-fledged electronic device that reads pulses and in the case of Apple Watch, carries out an ECG.

The casing has to be made of such material that can transmit the electromagnetic signals both ways. Once this purpose is served, it should be easy to fabricate and be less expensive. Apple’s patent application appears to explain all these aspects in detail going into the micro-level of the technology. What is proposed in the patent is a weave made of ceramic fibers. The exact description as it appears is

“Ceramic Weave for Low-Cost, Structural, Antenna-Permeable Watch Case,” US Patent No. 20200096948.

This weave will have an epoxy or other matrix material which gives it the strength needed and the ability to withstand shocks. The resultant material would be referred to as a composite.

Apple is known for filing thousands of patents in a year. A majority of them may not be followed through to their logical end. Once an idea is floated within its organization, the company would want to patent it and hold the rights. Some of these patented technologies find their way into their products making them unique and the company extracts the premium for it as well.
