Xiaomi is gaining momentum in the Android smartphone segment as the leading manufacturer but the company still lags behind when it comes to rolling out new updates. Many of their popular models like Xiaomi Redmi 4, Mi Mix 2, Redmi Note 3 are still stuck in older Android versions.
The company has been taking steps to ensure Android 8.0 and Android 7.0 operating systems are rolled out to as many compatible devices as possible. The Mi A1 is the Android One phone which runs on vanilla Android and receives updates from Google. In a recent announcement, Xiaomi has confirmed that they will roll out Android Nougat to many older devices. The manufacturer has launched the global stable version of MIUI 9 ROM to select handsets which is essential to update those models to the latest, compatible Android OS.
List of Xiaomi Phones that Receive the MIUI 9 Update
Being a company that largely focuses on the Indian market, the announcement was officially made by Xiaomi’s India MD and VP on Twitter. Xiaomi is going to bring the MIUI 9 stable ROM to all phones available in India. In a surprise move, the smartphone manufacturer has decided to update all the phones including those that got released four years ago.
Redmi 1S, Mi 3 are some of the oldest smartphones available in the country. These models got released four years ago but are still popular among users. With the latest MIUI update which supports Android Nougat, users will get access to Fastboot and recovery ROMs in supported devices.
The list of phones to receive the update include, Xiaomi Redmi 2, Redmi 2 Prime, Redmi 4A, Redmi Note Prime, Redmi 3S, Redmi 3S Prime, Redmi Note 4G, Redmi 1S, Redmi Note 3, Redmi Y1, Redmi Y1 Lite, Redmi 4, Redmi Note 4, Mi 4i, Mi 3, Mi 4, Mi Max, Mi Max Prime, Mi 5, Mi MIX 2, and the Mi Max 2.
Updating Your Phone to the Latest Android Version
If you are a Xiaomi user and own one of the mentioned devices, you should head to the settings page and check for a system update. Most users confirmed that they have received the update as part of the automated OTA feature but you can do it manually if needed.
The best of Android 7.0 including more responsive apps, split-screen functionality will now be available on Xiaomi phones. MIUI 9 also brings smart assistant which suggests apps based on what you are doing on your smartphone at the moment. The developer also allows users to flash their phone and install the update from MIUI forum. The process is bit tricky and should be attempted only by tech-savvy users.
