Google has decided that September 2017 is the last month of the guaranteed Android version updates for the Nexus 5X and 6P. This means that this two Nexus smartphone will run with Android 8.0 Oreo, but it might be the last big OS update for them.
The Nexus 6P and 5X will still receive security updates
Even if Google cut off timeline for the Nexus and Pixel updates is worrying news, not all major updates will end. Two years after they were available at the Google Store for sale, Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P will stop receiving automatic operating system updates. However, the devices will still receive security updates for 12 more months.
Even if most of us feel that the clock is ticking for these devices, Google did not officially announce they will no longer update the Nexus line. On the support page, the message is that after September 2017, there will be no guaranteed Android version update. Therefore Google has yet to make an official announcement.
Nexus 6 received an extra update
There is still hope that Nexus 5X and 6P will still receive Android updates in the future. There is a precedent: the Nexus 6, which received the Android 7.1.1 update after reaching its end date, October 2016.
For those who are skeptic regarding future updates for Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P, a good idea might be to switch to the Pixel smartphone line, also created by Google. Fans of the Android system will still prefer Google phones, since they are the first to get the OS updates.
The newest Android operating system is the Android 8.0 Oreo. It was first known as Android O and there were many speculations regarding its official name. The OS preceded Android Nougat.
