“Take my verses too serious, ya hate me” Drake sings on Successful, a track off his breakthrough collection So Far Gone (Octobers Very Own). I’m going to go out on a limb and say that this is one line in one of his verses that you should take very seriously. Drake creates music that’s all about having a good time and there is a lightweight vibe to it. Don’t look much into it. Don’t take this the wrong way, I’m not insulting so much as offering advice. I’m a fan.

The man is ridiculously talented. He deserves every ounce of praise he has received and with the release of his new album Thank Me Later (Young Money Entertainment), he should expect to receive a lot more of it in 2010.

Being a young guy can be difficult at times, but Drake has surrounded himself with the perfect cast for setting the stage for a long career. He’s worked with Lil Wayne, Trey Songs, and Alicia Keys to name a few. He has a level of cockiness with the I do amazing work and everyone needs to know about it type of attitude, ala Kanye West. However, he also a smooth delivery and charm similar to that of Usher or an early Craig David. Although I wouldn’t place him on that level of the mentioned heavyweights, it makes for some somewhat worthy comparisons. Drake has the rare combination of extreme confidence and a strong go getter type attitude. Only time will tell if these strengths help him build an empire or end of destroying him. Nonetheless, you should be paying attention.
