Though a bit delayed, the Android Pie update for the Verizon subscribers using the Moto Z3 is being rolled out. The update version ODX28.66-18-6-2 is already live and by the time you are reading this piece, your phone should have been already updated if you were a Moto Z3 user. The firmware update is accompanied by the Android security patch as well, of the January edition.
Some Highlights of the Updates on the Moto Z3
A major update the phone is receiving pertains to the Wi-Fi calling facility that Verizon extends to its customers. This is where the signal is too low or not available even, but if Wi-Fi connectivity is available, you can make voice calls on the strength of the Wi-Fi. Verizon would have sent you a separate notification on this. The Android security patch is dated December 1, 2018, but included by Verizon in this January update. Verizon previous update for the Moto Z3 was on December 27, 2018. All the changes that the latest version of Android brings will be automatically incorporated in your device once the update is downloaded and installed.
A Moto Mod to be Added to Support 5G?
This is an interesting bit of information that Verizon is also providing the Moto Z3 customers who have bought their devices through the carrier with the software to support their soon-to-be-launched 5G service in the US. But the carrier is conscious of the fact that the Moto Z3 has the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor which cannot support the 5G data speeds. Therefore, a Moto Mod may have to be added. That addon device is yet to hit the market. In due course, as the 5G service gets rolled out, the Mod may be sold and then the customers can buy that and start enjoying the 5G service of Verizon on the Moto Z3 smartphones. The update now contains the support the device will need for such an eventuality.
As mentioned, some of the other Moto models had already been provided with the Android Pie updates and some of them not as highly ranked or rated as the Moto Z3. Possibly the additional features being provided took it longer for Verizon to release the firmware update to this flagship device.
