Last year there was a strong connection between Samsung and Apple, as the Korean company was the sole supplier of an OLED display. It appears that things will change this year. Some recent leaks revealed that Apple might get a new supplier.
The company who might supply OLED displays is another well-known name, LG. At the moment we don’t know for sure whether Apple has made a choice, but several sources revealed that Apple is considering a collaboration with LG.
Better for business
Choosing an additional supplier will help Apple reduce costs and it will also be faster for the company to purchase the OLED displays. Up until now, Samsung was the only OLED displays supplier for Apples, which means that it was able to set the wanted price for the displays.
“Initially, Apple will get between 3 million and 5 million OLED displays from LG Display. LG plans to increase its production capacity. Apple is attempting to release new iPhones with enhanced features next year and it is eyeing developing foldable iPhones, which will come several years later,” revealed an insider.
Bad news for Samsung
Choosing a second supplier is definitely not a good sign for Samsung, but it also means that users can receive a higher supply of new iPhones. Nonetheless, it remains to see whether LG will be able to satisfy Apple’s needs, as the production is more limited compared to the Samsung one.
Initially, Apple had a deal with Samsung for 110 million OLED displays. According to the reports, it appears that the LG display that was produced for the V30 does not stack up against the newest Galaxy phones. While the deal is not completed yet, it appears that LG does its best to catch up with Apple’s demands.
