LG Likely to Launch a Smartphone with Penta Camera Setup

South Korea’s LG may be preparing to launch a smartphone of its own with five cameras in the rear. The company has filed a patent for this with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). The original application appears to have been filed in 2018 and the registration has been done this May 2019. There is a sketch showing the image of a handset and reveals some clues on what to expect.

Unique Arrangement of the Cameras

The image shows how the five cameras arranged on the rear panel of the LG smartphone. Three sensors are to be placed one below the other vertically and the remaining two horizontally. There appears to be a provision for a flash as well. The other takeaways from the schematic include the bezels, which are slim as you would expect. The front screen also indicates a chin that houses the front camera and the earpiece. It appears there may be two shooters in the front of this smartphone.

The bottom edge seems to indicate there would be a 3.5mm jack and a USB-C type port.

No Confirmation on the Model and When it Would be Launched

Beyond these estimations and explanations, there is hardly anything that can be inferred from the patent application filed by LG. There are comments like the spots on the rear panel that might include provision for a fingerprint sensor. In the present context of the market, this appears to be a distant possibility.

The most important question everyone would want to know is what plans LG has for the launch of a smartphone with these specs and features. It is true that merely obtaining a patent may not immediately lead to the launch of the device in the market. On many occasions, companies may decide against going ahead with the design altogether. You will have to wait till LG comes out with some kind of announcement on the plans. Now that the information on the patent is in the public domain the company may yet react and issue some statement.
