iPhone SE: iPhone Special Edition was truly a special iPhone. It represented iPhone’s return back to its roots and it brought back the small display. This decision was appreciated by many users, as not everyone enjoys large mobile phones. iPhone SE was released back in March 2016, and Apple continued to produce it for two years. However, at the September event, Apple announced that this iPhone will be discontinued.
They also decided to discontinue iPhone X and iPhone 6S. After this decision, users were left with no other small screen alternatives. Additionally, the most accessible product in the iPhone line up became the iPhone 7.
Many users mourned the last iPhone perfectly sized for the hand, and others criticized the fact that the new iPhones do not care about ergonomics. However, a successor for iPhone SE is still expected: iPhone SE 2.
What is the iPhone SE 2?
Rumors about the iPhone SE 2 have existed for a long period of time. Users and experts have speculated about a successor for the iPhone SE. There were plenty of leaks that also appeared to indicate that the iPhone SE 2 is, in fact, a reality.
Based on the information that we had, the iPhone SE 2 was expected to look like a smaller version of the iPhone X. The notch was also supposed to be there. In terms of price, the iPhone SE 2 was supposed to continue the legacy of its predecessor, and be available at a reasonable cost.
While many users were anticipating an iPhone SE 2 release this autumn, Apple ruined their dreams. There were two Apple events, one in September and one in October, but we received three different iPhones instead. Apple released iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max. They came to replace iPhone X, but there was no successor for iPhone SE.
Additionally, the design that we were hoping to see on the iPhone SE 2 (a small version of the iPhone X) belonged to the iPhone XR. These things, as well as the fact that Apple did not offer any official information about the iPhone SE 2, led us to believe that we won’t receive the much awaited iPhone SE 2.
There is still hope left
Receiving the iPhone SE 2 in 2018 is something that definitely won’t happen. We have to acknowledge the fact that Apple released three different iPhones this year, and this is something that required a lot of funds. Experts even claimed that Apple does not have enough money for another release. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggested that the company “used up its development resources”. However, this does not mean that we can’t hope for a 2019 release.
We have to remember that there will be another launch window in spring 2019. There were some rumors that the iPhone SE 2 was going to be released in March 2018, so this delay wouldn’t be that surprising.
Another thing that fueled our hope was an article that showed up on MacWorld. Its sources claimed that Apple is currently working at a model that will be a lot more affordable so that it will be accessible for all users. The codename of this product is “Hangzhou”.
A low-end device could mean a successor for the iPhone SE. The article also added that this product would be aimed at the Indian and Chinese markets. However, no other details were available. We do not know the price for it, nor the release date.
In the past year, there have been plenty of leaks that seemed to suggest that iPhone SE 2 is coming. For example, Sonny Dickson tweeted an image of two screen protectors, one for iPhone X and one for iPhone SE2. From the screen protectors, we could tell that the design was almost identical, and the only real difference was the size. They also both had the notch. SlashLeaks also posted at one point a leaked photo of the iPhone SE 2. While we do not know how believable the images are, we can say that there is no smoke without fire.
Another hint that seemed to support this rumor surfaced this spring. the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC), a Russian-language regulatory organization. Apple registered several model numbers with the commission. The model numbers were A1920, A1921, A1984, A2097, A2098, A2099, A2101, A2103, A2104, A2105 and A2106.
Why do we need iPhone SE 2?
Since Apple recently released three new models, you might think that there is no need for the iPhone SE 2. However, that is simply not true. The iPhone SE was precisely the alternative that many Apple users needed. The recent models come with plenty of benefits, but the truth is that not everybody can afford them.
A more accessible option is needed, and that is exactly what iPhone SE was. A successor to that iPhone would attract many new customers, and for some of them, it might be the only way to become Apple users.
Even if we take the price out of the way, there is still one major problem: all the other iPhones have a large screen. Many people dislike huge phones, and even Steve Jobs was against them. He believed that iPhones should match the size of the hand so that they can be used easily. The iPhone SE represented, in fact, a return to the product design rules imposed by Jobs.
However, if you take a look at the iPhone lineup you can see that there are no such iPhones available. The classic 4-inch screen is long gone, and even the “small” options available measure at least 6 inches. Releasing another handset that focuses on ergonomics could prove to be a wise move for Apple.
When it comes to the iPhone SE 2, we can only wait patiently to see whether it will become a reality. However, if you are still looking to purchase the iPhone SE, you should hurry and take advantage of the last ones available on the market.
