Known for its high-performance processors Intel has so far failed to put some serious problems to the graphical accelerators manufacturers, the integrated Iris Pro graphics on some mobile processors models, featuring 3D performances only at the entry level, barely able to run latest games on medium details. Skull Canyon NUC comes with a surprise that enables a dramatic performance increase in games.
On the surface, Skull Canyon NUC (NUC6i7KYK) is a stylish mini PC, only good for multimedia activities. Powered by an Intel Core i7-6770HQ processor from the Skylake family, accompanied by an Pro Iris Pro 580 graphics core and 32 GB DDR4 RAM, the mini PC can run most of the games at low or medium quality settings. The Ace in the Sleeve is the Thunderbolt 3 port which allows the connection of an external graphics accelerator, accommodated in a specially designed enclosure.
Skull Canyon NUC will be able to be purchased at prices of around $199, buyers receiving in exchange an amount of 16 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD and a Windows 10 license. Unfortunately the kit for external graphics accelerator has a price starting at $650, covering both the video card and the cost of the Razer Core Dock required to use Skull Canyon NUC at its full potential.
