Huawei Mate X2 Schematics Revealed Through Patent Application with EUIPO

The Chinese technology major Huawei has plans of launching a new foldable smartphone, a successor to the Huawei Mate X. This may be called the Huawei Mate X2 and there is not much information available at this moment about the device except for what can be gathered/guessed from the patent application the company has filed with the European Union Intellectual Property Office, EUIPO. The application is accompanied by some drawings of the proposed smartphone’s schematics etc.

Inward Folding Design with a Stylus

The most interesting thing to note in the design of the Huawei Mate X2 is that the phone will fold inward horizontally. This is like keeping a book with its back on top and opening the book towards the right. The foldable designs seen so far have the fold opening out horizontally, book-style or vertically as in the clamshell type. The other notable feature is the provision to insert a stylus on the left extreme part of the front of the phone on the sidebar. On top, there are two front-facing cameras that could be a first for the foldable phones so far seen in the market.

Quad Camera Section in the Rear

The patent application also reveals that the rear camera setup in the Huawei Mate X2 will sport 4 sensors. At this stage, there is very little known beyond this as the details of these sensors.

The remaining specifications can only be speculated now. The processor, for example, should be the Kirin 990 5G SoC. This is the processor the company has developed after the Huawei Mate X was launched last year. The Mate X sports the Kirin 980 SoC. In all probability, the Chinese company may decide to unveil a prototype of the new foldable device at the MWC 2020. That may be the occasion for at least some more information on the specs and features to be shared with the media/public.

Meanwhile, there are also rumors that the company has plans of showcasing a device with the moniker Huawei Mate Xs at the MWC 2020. This is also expected to be fitted with the Kirin 990 5G SoC. Would Huawei want to take on Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip set to be launched on February 14, 2020?

It may be recalled that Huawei had wanted to launch the Huawei Mate X last year when Samsung Galaxy Fold was announced. Since the device had some technology issues, Samsung withheld the formal release in the market. Huawei too waited till September 2019 to send out its Huawei Mate X. The competitors do work in that fashion and it will not be therefore surprising to see the Huawei Mate Xs being launched after the MWC 2020.
