Huawei Mate X 5G Launched in China; A More Powerful Foldable Model Likely in Q1 2020

Just weeks after the South Korean giant Samsung released its first foldable smartphone, Chinese rival Huawei launched its Huawei Mate X 5G in the Chinese market. The sale of this phone starts on November 15. The market expectations were that the Chinese major would be announcing a Kirin 990 processor-powered foldable smartphone. The company says that the device sporting the Kirin 990 SoC and carrying a model name Huawei Mate Xs will be launched in the first quarter of 2020.

8-inches Display When Unfolded

The Huawei Mate X 5G will have three display screens to boast of. In the folded condition, there would be a 6.6-inch front screen and a 6.38-inch screen in the rear. When fully unfolded, you will have an 8-inch display, virtually a tablet, in your hands. The front display is of the flexible OLED type and offers full HD+ screen resolution. Huawei’s Kirin 980 will be the processor powering the device.

There is a quad-camera setup on the rear of this device. The combination is 40MP+8MP+16MP. The fourth unit is a 3D time of flight (ToF) sensor. It comes with a powerful 4,500mAh battery with a humongous 55W SuperCharge fast charging support.

Huawei Mate Xs with Kirin 990 Announced

Huawei has made an official announcement at the same event that another foldable 5G smartphone with the more powerful Kirin 990SoC will be launched in the first quarter of 2020. The company has not disclosed the specifications of that device.

Observers feel that the Chinese company wanted to test the market with its Huawei Mate X 5G and based on the feedback, modifications to the Mate Xs model could be made.

Priced Higher Than Samsung Galaxy Fold

Huawei has fixed a price of CNY16,999, which converts to roughly $2403. This is much higher than what Samsung Galaxy Fold sells for, just under $2,000. There are many in the market who felt Samsung had priced its phone a bit high. Huawei’s foldable device is around 20% higher priced than Samsung’s Fold. Possibly, the company expects to sell only a limited quantity to the top sections of the society where price won’t be a consideration.
