DxOMark is the place where your smartphone’s selfie cameras can be tested and report can be obtained. And in their last testing they found that Google Pixel 3 is definitely one of the best phones as far as the selfie camera’s capabilities are concerned. And found to be equally good is the Samsung Galaxy Note 9. These two smartphones have scored much better than the others in contention, in that the gap between the second and the third-placed phone is quite wide. Here are some more details.
Quite an Elaborate Exercise
The testing of the selfie cameras is done by clicking some 1500 photos and video recordings that run for 2 hours and this is done for each of the phones taken up for testing. Besides the two phones mentioned above, the 8 that came down the order included two iPhones, the XS Max and the iPhone X, 2 Huawei models, the Mate 20 Pro and the P20 Pro, the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3, two more Samsung phones, the Galaxy S9 Plus and the Galaxy S8 and then there was the Google Pixel 2 as well.
Now to the Results
As mentioned above, the Google Pixel 3 and the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 shared the honors at the very top. Their score was 92 each. The Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 stood third while Apple’s iPhone XS Max was the fourth ranked phone when it comes to the selfie camera performance.
The phone placed at the fifth position was the Samsung flagship the Galaxy S9+. You would have expected this phone to do a better job than the Note 9. Interestingly, both these phones, released within a few months apart, boast of the same 8 MP shooter for selfies.
There are a few things to note as far as this testing of the cameras are concerned. The smartphone that scores high with the selfie camera need not necessarily fare equally impressively with the main camera output. Secondly, the way the phone is held, including the steadiness of the hand also matters.
Beyond the image output, the photos are evaluated on the basis of the texture, noise generated and other fines aspects. But the fact remains that the Google Pixel 3 and the 3XL have been consistently rated high for their camera performance, outshining some of the Chinese models that had dual and triple camera arrangements.
