Till last week, there were rumors surrounding the release date for the next version of the popular video game Grand Theft Auto, GTA. GTA 6 is due for release as GTA 5 was launched a good seven years back. However, the game was in the news today as one of the co-founders of Rockstar and a key contributor to most of their successes, Dan Houser is leaving the company. Dan’s brother Sam Houser continues to be the CEO at Rockstar.
A Two-Decade Long Association
Dan Houser’s departure from the scene will certainly be felt at Rockstar since he has been an integral part of every game that Rockstar has produced and released including the most popular ones like the GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2. These games have attained legendary status and Dan Houser was the executive producer for all of them. He was also the lead writer. He had, on occasions, lent his voice to in some games.
The stock of Take-Two Interactive, the parent company that owns Rockstar has already taken a beating following this revelation of his quitting.
Reason for Dan’s Quitting Not Known
It is very rare that founders quit their own ventures. They are generally passionate about it. There can be situations where the business is running at a loss, or the business is not growing. The quitting could also be due to some differences develop among the founders. Nothing of that sort appears to have been the case here.
It cannot be denied that Dan Houser had been on an extended holiday for a few months after the release of the Red Dead Redemption 2 game last year. There is no word on what he plans to do next either.
If one were to search for some obscure reason, the only one that surfaces is a debatable statement attributed to Dan Houser that he put in 100 hour weeks in Rockstar before the release of RDR 2. This was interpreted to convey that the staff of the company were overworked and exploited. Though some clarifications were issued later that it referred to only a few senior writers, authorities would have wanted to get to the bottom of the issue.
It remains to be seen how the company moves ahead without the key personnel and how it copes with the important development this year when the launch of the next versions of gaming consoles, PlayStation by Sony and Xbox One by Microsoft will take place.
