Identified so far as Android N, the next version of Android seems to have its name in a close connection with a famous American metropolis and… cookies.
So far, Google has used code names consisting of 3 letters for the different versions of Android. For example, the KitKat, Marshmallow and Lollipop versions had the codenames: Key Lime Pie (klp), Lemon Meringue Pie (lmp) and Macadamia Nut Cookie (mnc).
The new version of Android has been identified in the archives of AOSP (Android Open Source Project) with the code name nyc. Among the many possible variations, the acronym might actually mean New York Cheesecake.
Meanwhile, Google is conducting several public polls for choosing the final name, asking the participants to nominate the most “tasty foods” that begin with the letter N.
