When it comes to protecting your machine from malware, hackers or other viruses, an antivirus software is, of course, essential. But there are so many options on the market that it’s hard to choose just one to use for the computer. For this reason, we made up a list of useful programs that are both convenient and efficient when it comes to protecting your machine and your data.
Bitdefender Antivirus Plus 2017
Even though this one is not free, it deserves every penny. You can even pay $19.99 for one-year protection for one computer, but you also have the option of a yearly subscription for 3 machines, which is priced at $59.99. This offers you secure password manager, ransomware protection and an onscreen keyboard. However, even the free version is quite useful and straightforward, so it deserves a shot.
Avira Antivirus Pro
Even though its looks are kind of raw, the Avira Antivirus is quite useful and easy to use. It has a nice and appealing design, but the thing here is the fact that the free version doesn’t offer as many features. However, the paid one brings up quite some value for the money. Truth be told, it is indeed cheaper than other rivals, costing $45 a year for just one PC. For this money, you get ransomware protection, but also other features, such as USB device gatekeeping.
Microsoft Windows Defender
Perhaps the most appreciated advantage of the Windows Defender is the fact that it comes together with the Windows OS. The price you might find, $199, refers to the possibility of upgrading to the Windows 10 if you have an earlier version. It is quite clean and straightforward, plus it runs automatically in the background. You don’t have to think about much, since it also upgrades itself to the latest virus definitions. Last year, the tech giant also added ransomware protection, both for the OS and the incorporated Edge browser.
This has been a long respected name in the industry, and the latest version of their antivirus does not fail the expectations. According to the new testing made on it, people saw that it offers lots of customizable options, but it doesn’t feel heavy or annoying. Sadly, there is no free version for it, and if you choose the cheapest option, you will only get the virus scanning feature and a little more. As such, you have to pay $59.99 a year for three machines.
Avast Pro Antivirus
Another popular antivirus is the Avast Pro one, which is quite good, since it gathered positive reviews from PC Mag and AV-Test. However, things don’t look so great. The worst part when trying to install the Avast Antivirus is the fact that it also tried to install Google Chrome, without asking for permission. Moreover, it also wanted to install the SafeZone browser, also without asking. What’s more, it is also one of the most expensive on the market, costing $59.99 a year for just one machine.
Norton Antivirus Basic
The Norton software, made by Symantec, is also another veteran in this field. You can often find it on the newer Windows computers, but you can also buy a separate subscription if you wish. Unfortunately they do not offer any free version, but the entry-level price is not that high: $19.99 a year for one PC. It has an attractive interface that is easy to use. However, there are some issues that appear when you try to use it, which brings it down a little. During tests, it was the only one to freeze while it was performing a full scan, so it’s not really something we would recommend.
