Everyone would want to know when Apple will enter the race for a foldable device. It is rumored now that an iPad, not an iPhone, might indeed be the first foldable device from Apple and that it will be out in 2020. A foldable iPhone could be pushed to 2021.
Market’s Wait Quite Long and Protracted
The market is by this time tired of waiting for the first proper foldable smartphone. It was expected that Samsung could win the race and the company did release the Samsung Galaxy Fold as well. However, the product did not measure up to the hype and the company had to quickly beat a retreat and rework on the design and some other aspects. The latest report is that the phone will be released in September. Some take this information with a bit of cynicism.
The other company that was expected to launch a foldable phone is Huawei with its Mate X model and it was expected to be announced by now. For some reason, the company has gone into shell and there is no clarity on when the Mate X will reach the market. The foldable Motorola RAZR is the third device that is being talked about.
Foldable Devices A Price-Sensitive Product: Survey
In an interesting survey conducted by UBS, it has been revealed that the average buyer on the street wouldn’t mind buying a foldable device provided it is priced around $600 above the price of the top-end smartphones. If you take $1,000 as the average price of the regular smartphone, then $1,500 could be the comfortable price range acceptable to the buying public. Samsung has indicated the price of Galaxy Fold to be around $2,000.
It is the same survey that predicts that Apple would be launching a foldable iPad in 2020 and a foldable iPhone in 2021.
It is reported that Microsoft and Lenovo are the other two companies displaying interest in foldable devices but one has to wait till more details emerge on their products.
