Wall Street Journal has made a number of predictions on the iPhone 2019 models. The important points are highlighted here. These should still be considered more speculative than real. However, much of what has appeared in WSJ is interesting and cannot be just overlooked. Here are the important points.
Three Models and New Camera Setup Predicted
WSJ has said that Apple will release three models again in 2019 as it did in 2018. There will be a successor to the iPhone XS Max, that will sport a triple camera setup in the rear. Some renders of the rear panel have been in circulation and already there are critics calling it not so aesthetic. The other two models may be limited to just 2 cameras in the rear.
On the 2019 iPhones’ display, the prediction is that the high-end iPhone XS Max successor will come with the OLED panel, while the XR model will have to do with the LCD panel for now. Apple may shift to all OLED panels only the next year. It must be added here though that there is another rumor that has it that all three models will have the OLED panels this year.
Status of These Designs Revealed
WSJ goes on to claim that these designs as predicted here have moved within Apple and have cleared the engineering validation tests. It is in the next design validation test that the team may tweak these designs to reflect the final one planned. There is some guesswork on what the third camera’s function could be. Going by the way some of the other brands have fitted the rear cameras in their smartphones, one can expect that it could be a wide-angle lens.
A Lot at Stake for Apple
There’s no doubt in any analyst’s mind that Apple is at a kind of crossroads. The iPhones were the largest selling in its product portfolio for almost a decade now, but that scenario is changing, slowly, but surely. For many reasons, some known, some not so obvious the overall volume of smartphones being sold worldwide is falling. Apple is at the apex of this matrix, selling the highest priced phones, has been hit the hardest. 2019 may prove to be the watershed year for Apple and iPhones. There’s only so much you can do with the design and features of a device like a smartphone and the pricing paradigm too leaves very little space to maneuver.
More details will definitely emerge on the 2019 iPhones in the days to come.
