Apple to Manufacture iPhone SE with Carbon-Free Aluminum

The carbon-free aluminum contributes towards reducing emissions resulting from smelting. To bring down the carbon footprints, the Cupertino-based tech giant discontinued its practice of shipping the adaptor inside the primary phone boxes.

In today’s times, a large part of the brand-building exercise for a company involves adapting environment-friendly manufacturing processes. If a company does something that works against the environment, it gets elaborate media coverage and also creates a bad impression on consumers, a large number of whom are conscious about the choices they make today. Apart from adhering to tried-and-tested eco-friendly practices, companies are also making an effort to come up with newer methods to manufacture sustainable products.

In the last couple of years, Apple has spearheaded several eco-friendly production techniques in the technology sector. Taking its commitment towards saving the environment further, Apple is now planning to manufacture iPhone with the help of carbon-free aluminum. The company’s investment of $4.7 billion in Green Bonds has enabled it to start the development process of innovative low-carbon manufacturing and recycling technologies. This piece of information has been confirmed by Apple itself.

The carbon-free aluminum contributes towards reducing emissions resulting from smelting. To bring down the carbon footprints, the Cupertino-based tech giant discontinued its practice of shipping the adaptor inside the primary phone boxes. The aluminum, which will be used in the manufacturing of the iPhone SE, is touted to be the first of its kind metal that will be manufactured in large quantity outside a laboratory and without the creation of direct carbon emissions.

In an officially released statement, Lisa Jackson, the vice-president of Environment, Policy and Social Initiatives at Apple, stated that the company is committed to making the planet a better and a greener place to live in. She further stated that the company’s Green Bonds will serve as an important tool to propel its environment-saving efforts forward.

Elysis, the company that is credited with creating the world’s first-ever carbon-free aluminum smelting process, made an announcement about paving the way for the first commercial-purity aluminum at a huge scale for manufacturing Apple products.

Instead of greenhouse gases, this particular technology produces oxygen. Apple will procure the first batch of low-carbon aluminum from Elysis and use it primarily to manufacture iPhone SE. Since 2018, it has been working towards this mission diligently. Apple has taken effective steps to ensure that the production of carbon-free aluminum happens at a fast pace. Apart from getting into an investment-based partnership with Alcoa, Rio Tinto, Apple has also managed to raise funds from the governments of Quebec and Canada.
